A few brake upgrade questions!

Right i know this comes up alot but it is time for new pads all round and new front discs.

The car is never tracked so can people reccommend me a decent setup if its worth upgrading?

I can get Brembo HC discs for £65 or Max for £90 so not much in it really. Are max worth the extra?

Also are standard pads good enough or shall I look at something like greenstuff?

Finally, would I benefit from braided lines?

Avoid greenstuff. Max are worth the extra, braided lines are a must. Ferodo ds2500 pads are excellent for road use.

OK so I will notice the difference with braided lines?

DS2500 are a bit pricey LOL. Would I be ok with standard pads or should I defo upgrade them?

If you have the cash then upgrade the pads.

Carbon Lorraine are amazing but eat through wheels like nothing elses if you dont remove the carbon residue that they produce!! Excellent for track days. They will also murder your discs.

Braidied hoses mean that you will get a much firmer feel when braking as they dont 'give' under stress.

Goodridge are good for hoses and are quite cheap in comparison to others.

So i'm going to get Brembo Max Discs and Braided lines.

But what pads all round? I don't want Carbon Lorraines and DS2500 are going to be more than the discs and lines put together. Anything else I should use or is it worth saving for the Ferodos?

ferodo's are the ones to get schweppy, running that with the brembo carbon max's, goobridge lines and 4 dot castrol BF and its a good setup!

set of brembos were on ebay for 150£ for the calipers.

plus alexs trophy set up (formerly ali's) were £400.

4 pots are quality, but you still need the discs and lines and pads on top.

Clean my wheels once a week, brake dust isnt too bad.

ive got brembo max, plus braided hoses, and pagid blues. the difference over standard is amazing, as in i sold my 4pots on, cos they were not as good. pagid blues were 120, a set but very worth it.

there not that bad matey and compared to standard they are the best setup for a reasonable budget.

be careful with rare discs, if you do need them, they are a pain due to the bearing.

Pagid RS4-2 are more like £150 for the front of an RS Clio. Took me a while to convince myself that they were worth the money, but after 16 laps of the Nurburgring last weekend . . . they are. Every bloody penny.

i think its worth getting as good a pads as you can afford as its worth the expense.
Many a wise person (re fred) has said that 4 pots are overkill on a small car such as the clio.
decent pads + upgraded discs (to stop your better pads from chewing thru discs) and braided lines are a very good investment

overkill on the road maybe, trackdays deff not overkill, 4 pots are one of the best upgrades iv fitted and i havnt had a chance to get them on track yet. So much more stopping power.

Many people I have spoken to recently, including engineers at CircuitSupplies have said the clio 182 race cars were underbraked, as most people on this forum seam to base there opinions and tuning choices on what the race car runs i totally disagree. The engineers had test days at UK circuits and mentioned how the brembos on the 197's are much more up to the job.

i have said from the begining that 1*2's brakes were not up to track work. Hence why i got the Compbrake setup comissioned.

Which is funny, as back then everyone banged on about up rated pads and disc being the max, then today someone asks what discs and pads they should get and everyone is banging on about 4 pots.

maybe i am just ahead of my time. lol.

Also, take what some 'experts' say with a pinch of salt, as more often than not its just personal opinion, rather than cold hard proven facts.

LOL, well as I said, its not being tracked so i'm not too bothered as long as the car stops as well as/better than the standard discs and pads.

So what are your recommendations?

i have never changed the discs on any of my 1*2's, just went straight to 4 pot setup (which come with larger rotors).

I did run some DS2500's on my 182 with standard discs which seemed to work better than standard.

but like many have said, braided lines, decent pads and discs will be good enough.

Have you ever had any problems with your brakes, Schweppy?

Cause if you haven't, what's the point in upgrading? It depends on driving style, of course, but according to my experience, the standard setup is fine for road use.

I stand corrected then ^^ !
I have read several posts describing how 4 pots on a light car such as a clio are overkill as single are more than capable.
Personally, I am aware of the shortfalls with non braided lines and standard pads as I have experienced fade with them.
(specifically when braking hard on the slip road en route to rws last year as i was late) to which i fitted braided lines, and then during a trackday @ croft with oem + braided lines on my 2nd or 3rd lap @ full chat.
I was led to belive an uprated pad for tract use would be required which also resulted in a need for discs to stop the pads eating them ?

re 182 race cars used pf 97 pads iirc ?

the 182 race cars used pf97, pagid blues, carbon lorraine, Ferodo DS3000, DS1.11 - theres many compounds listed in the parts catalogue.

I dont think it will make a lot of difference if you use, renault discs, brembo HC or Max a pad like the PF97 is going to distroy them.

Out of all opinions it seems Brembo Max, braided lines and Ferodo ds2500 is a nice setup for road use, i'll be getting some soon.

I'm riding Green Stuff now , with standard discs. Comparing it to a 172FF (FeelX's car) last week who is running OEM setup; the outcome was that OEM was better than my setup !
Only thing good about the Greens are that they do'nt give too much brakedust

I found my greens to feel a lot better than stock, weird :/

Has anyone on here tried Yellows yet? They are supposed to be pretty decent with a good compromise of not being as harsh on the discs as Reds but with similar stopping power but also working well from cold.

Braided lines and a set of either of the Brembo discs is a must though

I had Brembo HC discs and EBC redstuff pads fitted on Sat, done nearly 300 miles since and they're awesome already. MUCH better than standard, and I reckon better than the greenstuff pads I had in the 172, though can't really comment yet as they're not fully bedded in yet.

Got them from Rentech.

Think it worked out about £100 for the discs and pads and then labour on top. I'm not sure I had quite a bit done, so I just know the final cost of it all.
