A new noise....

  AB182, Audi A5 3.0
HI all! if you've read my other posts, you'll have some background on this....

after fitting my nice new cam belt 2day, i was expecting the noise form the waterpump/cambelt compartent to be gone...HOWEVER...ITS NOT!!!!!!!!

i think my car needs a gd kick up the arse! i dare not do it tho, might fall to bits.

it sound like a belt'ish sound....a low whale, that gets higher with engine revs. only difference now, i can hear it all the time! anyone know what it could be?! im thinking it might be cambelt/aux belt or just the noise a clio water pump may make??? little help would be nice!

laterz

Sounds like the waterpump, bearings could have gone,

Did you check for any play in the water pump whilst there was no tenision on it??

on the aux belt, only the alt. on the cam belt; water pump & tensioner, thats it.

Ross16V - whats yours sound like? maybe we do have same fault.

i drove it 50miles 2day, and the noise is still there, however its not any worse. its like the sound a washing machine makes when it spins and you can hear the rubber against the glass.

Did you change the tensioner pully when you did the belt?

Does the noise increase/ get fatser when you sit still and rev the engine, if so its the aux belt, if not cambelt.

yes the noise does change when i rev engine (and cars not moving) it get slightly higher pitched.

does that still sound like aux belt then?! is it to tight or to slack?

Would say thats the aux belt, mine does it on one fo the pullies, its a 10 year old car things go, the bearinhgs in the pully have prolly gone.

Try spraying the BACKS of them with WD-40, but do ti one at a time, i found the WD-40 is a temp fix and will last for a week or so cus its so thin, make sure you don't get any ont eh belt or the pullies themselves

Ignore what i said about it being teh aux belt, i'm a f**king idiot and forgot than when teh rev the engine the cambelt is turning faster too:eek:

lol i was wondering lol. also i dont have any pullys on the aux belt other than the one on the drive shaft & the one on the alt. nothing to spray!:S

Take the AUX belt off and run the engine up for a short period if the noise has gone you know its not the cambelt/tensioners etc.

After doing that switch off engine, and have a feel of the waterpump/alternator and so on.
If you turn them by hand you shouldn't feel any roughness in any of them.

I expect its the waterpump, but check the others.

If you still have no luck, refit all parts, start engine and use a noise detection tool such as this.....

iv put a new water pump in, and it dosnt work off aux belt, it works off cam belt!! aux belt only drives the alternator. wont my engine screw up if i run it without the alt? its has a ingnition module, so it need lots of power to work!

Doh!! I really should of looked to see what model you had.

Wont hurt to run it without the aux belt for a little while.
