A Question...

  1.2 Dynamique 16v
So I detailed my car last week, concentrating fully on getting the paintwork nice.

Washed, clayed, polished and waxed.

I am presuming I don't have to do this all over again every time I come to wash it. So I was wondering how to keep on top of it now without having to spend 6 hours like I did on Sunday.

Is it just a shampoo, dry and polish or wax?

Advice required!

Cheers

Tommy, did you PM me a while ago and get a reply off me? Can't for the life of me remember lol!

You only need to wash and dry buddy. The wax should last you a couple of months. What did you use?

What wash method do you have at the moment?

Yeah I PM'd you but no response :(

I bought aload of stuff last weekend from Halfords.

Majority of it was Meguiars.

Meguiars Deep Crystal Carnauba Car Wax
Meguiars Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner
Meguiars Deep Crystal Car Polish
Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit
Zymol Car Wash Shampoo 500ml

Method was:

Rinse
Shampoo with Zymol (using wash mitt)
Rinse
Dry
Clay using Megs kit
Rinse
Dry
Polish using Megs polish (using a microfibre mitt)
2 x Wax using Megs wax (using a microfibre mitt)

Stand back and took some flicks :)

use PH balanced water and you don't even need to dry. Then again in England the water is like acid.

Flol, got the tonage for RO water Highlander??? iWish.

Tommy, sorry buddy, I'm a bugger with PMs if I read them at work - usually then forget to reply when I get home!

Nothing wrong with that for your useage buddy. Just wash with the mitt and the shampoo. Once done, sheet water over the surface (open hose technique) as this will reduce the amount of water on the paintwork. Then dab the paint dry with a decent towel.

You can top up the wax as and when the beading stops/fades.

Dose this just mean let the water flop out of the end of the hose pipe then, without putting you finger over the end to actually jet it?
Going home for a weekend in September and going to clean the car with the hose pipe for the first time ever, I think my arms will like it more than the usual carrying buckets of waters out over and over again, and this sounds useful to know!

Cheers for the advice mate.

This weekend I'll see what its like when I've just shampoo'd it.

Would it hurt to put some more polish or wax on? Its abit addictive!

Precisely that Kat.

Polish, no. Wax, in a few weeks/months. Never any harm in topping up buddy.

Oh, and get some pics up to show off your work - sounds like the car deserves it.

I've put some up in clio media and projects. Not had much attention though :(

I'll get some closer up too though once it's shampered this weekend. I'm really happy with the claying results, the paintwork came up really nicely.

ah brilliant, looking forwards to having no work for a week and a proper yard to give it a good wash in!
Looking the info about the water though, i think some time last year my parents went off the mains water and we only use water pumped from our bore hole, that shouldn't matter should it? i think it's all cleaned and filtered, just the drinking water isn't clear anymore iirc

Also home the week of my birthday... so tempted to ask for a combined present of a da polisher or some sort
lol plenty of pannels i could practise on, 9 tractors I could mess up before I get to any actual car paint work!

Just thought id add this in. It's always good to wash the car after clay to get rid of any residue.

Sealing is also good after the polish stage and before the wax.

A sealent is basically an additional barrier to protect the wax. A couple of coats of sealent with a coat of wax should see you through afew months, after that just reapply the wax.

Autoglym EGP is a good sealent that many of us use.

Isn't rain water a good bet on neutral water?

Nope. Acid rain, especially in built up areas like Manchester/NW.

It doesn't protect the wax Pedro - but I think that's a mis-type, not your misunderstanding.

Sealent to me is either or. If you have the time to wash and re apply wax on a regular basis, wax it. If it's winter, or you live away from a tap/wash area, seal it up. Will last longer.

Ha, thanks for that.

The sealent protects the polish, the wax is an overcoat for the sealent that you can just top up every month or so.

Lol. Again, it doesn't protect the polish, it protects the fresh surface of the paint that the polish has uncovered. But you're getting there and I'm being pernickety ;)

Confusion.

Someone tell me in lamens terms what the sealant does, and where/when to apply lol

A sealent is like a liquid wax, i.e. it seals the paint after polishing it. Think of paint needing lacquer to last against weather, washing etc. The sealent is like a temporary "lacquer".

Sealents are more resistant to weathering than waxes, so last longer. Hence me mentioning if you won't get to wash your car very often, use a sealent.

Ahem, if we're being pernickety he's half right as it offers protection to the fillers found in most polishing compounds. ;)

XOXO

Cleared up nicely!

So polishing a car that has wax on is bad then or is it ok if you polish then do all the usual after polishing?? What would need to be done to a car that is waxed before applying polish??

Thanks

You can polish a car that has wax on, but as the term polish would suggest, you will be getting rid of any protection on there. Therefore, as you have said (in a way!), you need to polish and protect afterwards.
