Advice on 172 exhust

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Morning,

Just hoping someone can give me some advice. I've just bought a W Reg 172. The first night I had it I noticed that the power was very uneven when the revs were below about 4000 but even more noticable below 3000. The power came in waves and you could feel it pulling unevenly. I also noticed I was only getting about 22mpg and that included a run down four junctions of the m1.

After a good check of the car I realised it was blowing from the exhuast, where the middle pipe went into the backbox was loose.

The dealer is now in the process of fitting a new exhaust, they did this with no problem at all and the guy even lent me his own car for the day to say sorry.

My question is: would the exhaust issue account for the uneven power and high fuel consumption or is there another underlying problem?

Thanks for any help.

Hmm,not heard of a blowing exhaust giving uneven power but i'm sure the more technically minded guys will be able to answer for you.

It would affect the running of the car quite a bit, especially the mpg.

With a new system you should see improvements.

Update: they can't get a new one until tuesday but they have patched up the old one so thatI can get around in the mean time. The performance is about a million times better, smooth on and off the power and I'm getting about 40mpg on the motor way. 25mpg around town and about 29mpg thrashing it around some b roads.

Does this consumption sound about right?

Thanks again for any info.

Sounds better than what I get. I only get 22-23mpg round town but my shoes are made of lead. ;)
If i drive like a girl on a long run I can get about 44mpg.

But in fairness I didnt buy the car for economy.

Thanks for the input people. Its running pretty good now. I've just let a mate have a go who drives a supercharged corrado thats had loads of work done on it and he reckons mines faster than his so there can't be much wrong with it!

Should be even better when the new exhaust is on. I was just getting a bit worried because someone suggested it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders but with the grunt and the fuel consumption I don't think thats likely now.

Thanks everyone.

(p.s. I f00kin love this car!)
