Advice on multiple issues - help me get this Clio sport 172 right :-)

  clio
Hi,

I am having a really hard time with my girlfriends Clio sport 172, I can do various work on the car myself i would say basic to intermediate as far as my skills go. But we have a few problems with her Clio Sport 172 so i am hoping someone can help me :)

  1. The car has developed a humming droning noise whilst moving seems to be noisier at lower speeds. The car has had two new rear discs fitted recently (I did these), I got genuine Renault discs with the bearings pressed in already so I don't think that it is the rear bearings - could I have overtightened the hub nut would that make a noise? Also one of the rear hubs was missing a washer - i spoke to someone who said this is normal?!?!? Anyone confirm? Doesn't sound right to me!
I suspect that it must be the front wheel bearings - my question is how difficult is it to fit front wheel bearings? Is it part of the hub? If so would it be easiest to buy a new hub and fit these from a DIY perspective? (I don't have a wheel bearing press)

I have also been told that the Cat has gone - could it be this that is making the noise? How difficult is it to fit a new cat?

2. The driver side front jacking point is slightly bent is this a weak point on the Clio Sport? Am i best knocking this straight a little bit? Is it an MOT failure? Where else would someone suggest jacking up the front of the car?

3. I think one of the rear springs has gone (broken) how much are these a pair?, but also the rear shocks are making a bit of a squeaky noise is this normal? The car doesn't seem to be bouncy - anyone got a pic of how they should look?

Thanks in advance for your help

Rich

you will have a bit of a job doing the bearing without a press but it can be done, best to get someone that has done it before though.
the cat will need to be replaced if it is defo gone as this will fail an m.o.t, it wont be the source of the noise most likely the wheels bearing from what you have explained.
i wouldnt worry about the jacking point unless it is mega rusty you will have no probs, this is common.
you wouldnt be able to tell if the shocks are fucked from a pic unless it is somthing very very obvious, are they leaking any oil. best to get mechanic to look at them.

with regard to hubs, i bought the bearings took my hubs off and got my mate to run me around a few garages untill i found someone looking bored and asked if he could just sort it for me.

he only wanted 5quid so i was happy with that

when changing the rear discs, did you pay atteintion not to lose the little spacer thingy behind the disc on the stub?

when you say missing a washer do you mean the one behind the rear disc? if this is missing it will cause the disc to move causing damage to the bearing, disc, pads, abs system, wheel bolts and stub axel, garage done this on one of my cars causing over £400 of damage, lucky warranty sorted it! it was making a loud grone noise too like a wheel bearing failing, then it started banging and i lost the brakes

I know this only too well from the last time my rear discs were changed, the shims were missing altogether on both sides and I had a 60mile trip home!
All is sorted and running ok now apart from the odd "farting" in the brake pedal which I'm led to believe is the common ABS ring problem.

What did you need to get replaced Martin?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.

The washer I was referring to is between the disc and the hub nut which means the bearing is just against the hub nut! Doesn't seem right to me, seems to be missing on the rear n/s (passenger) but there is one on the off side (drivers). Can anyone on here supply me with these washers? I think I'll put one on just to be sure.

I don't think I did lose the spacer how big is the spacer? I'm going to take the rear assembly apart asap and check, I must admit I did it all in a bit of a rush (in the rain in a lunch hour!) Rear discs seemed to go on fine and the caliper seated ok. I take it that it would be noticeable if I had not put the spacer back on pretty immediately (i did the discs 3 months ago)

I am sure the humming noise is a wheel bearing, have found furbars guide so will give it a go, i have the ball joint splitter etc.. will take the bearing to a garage and get them pressed :) I recently put a new hub on my focus and that was straight forward apart from one of the ball joints was stuck pretty solid.

Another weekend under the car.

Cheers

Think you might have hit the nail on the head here.....

I've had all wheels off tonight, front one near side seemed a little suspect, but on taking it out for a test drive i could tell the noise was defo coming from the rear.

Took the OS rear disc off and low and behold no spacer - this is definitely the problem (i hope! certainly won't do the car any good.)

Thing is i still have the cracked disc in the shed (seized caliper had caused cracked disc arrgghh) and no spacer stuck on that either...very odd mind you the other side had no thrust washer. - some muppets have certainly lost bits and pieces.

Anyone on her supply the washers?

Cheers

Rich

Contact Wests Renault in the trader section, he´ll sort you out.
Better get some new rear discs with bearings, lack of spacer may f**ked your bearing.
