Advice :s

  Clio Sport 182
Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I have just purchased my first Clio 182 Cup. I think I had it at a bargain because its been left for a year with a broken driver side spring, is this a common fault with this car? and is it easy to fix?

I think I got a bit of a bargain but would like some advice on what to look out for (common faults) I bought the car for what I think to be very cheap as it only cost me £650. It has 70k on the clock so I am assuming I need to change the CAM belt and obviously get a service but do you think the breaks will be gone as its been left for so long?

I did jump in a bit head first into this without properly investigating the car but I couldn't leave it there for that price. Should I be expecting a whopping garage bill?

brakes are cheap as chips on these cars, aftermarket springs aren't exactly expensive either.

The cambelt will cost over £500 though so budget £700 - £800 and you'll have a full new set of springs, cambelt kit, and brakes.

£500 for a CAM - OUCH

No pictures yet mate I am waiting for the keys and paper work so hopefully get it to a garage or home to fix it sometime this week.

I am in South Wales Cardiff area.

So do you think I will need new breaks? after sitting there that long. I did hope to get it all done for under £500

I would bother with brakes unless they fail to scrub off, I'm using a car currently that had been sat for 3 years nearly, brakes are fine. just be sensible about it, if they don't stop you, grind a lot or vibrate then yes change them. but don't just chuck money at it for no reason imo.

Don't be tempted to let a back street garage do the cambelt and save a few quid, they need to use specific locking tools (which most won't have). Plenty of stories of them being mis timed

Best off taking it to one of the specialists off here, they will see you right. Also the brakes aren't expensive on these cars so I wouldn't worry about that if they need replacing

new sportlines/pro strings £160 (Renault £100 each )new dampers £200.if you getting new springs . new sparkplugs/ oil/ filter..
take your wheels off and check the discs ,may only be surface rush..get a wire brush.
do stuff to the car as you get to know it better..may find things might not need replacing yet.

Thanks for all the advice so it does look like I have made a wise investment.

How are they to drive and day to day running? I have had a few hot hatches in the past I have owned 2 206 GTI a 106 GTI and a Fiesta zetec S but have never driven a Clio Sport. I would imagine the 182 to be really quick but have heard that some are a lot less than 182 is this true?

as above, they rarely make stock power, but they're not shy, wind them up to the limiter in 2nd/3rd and you'll have a giggle :) (belts done first, lol!)

oh and sack wire brushing the brake discs, that's mad, the pads do that for you!lol!

Glad everyone agrees its a good purchase, not that I am looking to sell but I dont want to be paying silly money out on it and if I can get it on the road for about £1,200 I will be happy.

Oh forgot to mention its a 54 plate.

I don't mind popping to have a look around it some time for you fella if you wan't? Where about's in Cardiff are you?

Caerphilly mate will have the keys tomorrow or Thursday. It's just getting it home with a snapped spring.

Ah rite I don't know Caerphilly well at all. I still don't mind having a look round for you but it will have to be some time next week if that is ok? I wouldn't recommend driving it fella. Where about's are you getting it from?

The car is outside my works 15 mins away, my mate got a trailer for his 4x4 so gonna get him to pick it up for me.

Is there any specialist from the area that you deal with? And fit CAM belts for a tenner or less haha

I know you're joking about but don't go cheap on getting the belt fitted.

No I got a merc c240 (the v6 one haha) and a Renault scenic bus thing for my nipper. I will probably just use it for a weekend car unless I sell the bus.

No I know mate I wouldn't take it just anywhere I have been reading up on it and it sounds like a specialist job. It tends to be that way with larger engines in smaller cars.

Thought I would give you an update

Got the keys today and it's mint inside looks like the back seats have never been used. Battery was obviously dead so tried bumping it with no luck. Had to nip to halfords to buy a new battery plugged it in and started first time. Tried to drive it but was knocking violently so took the wheel off and the springs on both sides have gone so I moved the springs away from the wheel and drove it home gently.

Looks like I will need two new springs, exhaust is blowing so will have to look at that, new tyre and the mileage is actually 64k so gonna see what shape the cam belt is in so might not need to do it for a few months.

Overall very happy with it and can't wait to fit it and get it back on the road.

Got some front springs here you could have butty, there from a 172 so not sure if they'll fit...if so your more than welcome to them.

I just looked through the last service and mot and it has an advisory for a front leaking shock so looks like I am gonna have to buy them both, thanks tho mate proper nice of you.

Another little up-date managed to get change the springs as you can see they definatley needed changing -

Just taken it to a garage for an MOT and it failed on the following -

Air bag warning light is on
Hazzard switch
2x front CV boots
Bulb on number plate
n/s suspension arm has play
exhaust emissions (which is the centre box)

advisories
Front and rear disc are badly pitted
Brake pad is low on rear

Yeah although I dont think it will cost too much the most expensive bit will probably be the centre box as its blowing, I thought it was ok for the car being stood still for just over a year.
