Advise on potential Willy problems

Hello all,

Im looking to buy a williams 1. Viewed and test driven it, but to be safe had an AA check done on her. Would have got a friend to check it over but it was 150 miles away.

Ok the problems encountered were;

Front break hoses cracked

Rear tyres worn

Rear shocks slightly damp

Play on steering rack

I know most of them arent a problem. the hoses i have been told are about £15 each, and whos tyres arent slightly worn. But i am slightly worried about the rear shocks being slightly damp. does slightly damp mean they are about to leak badly and need replacing? or is it not a big problem?

And does anyone know how much williams rear shocks are to replace?

I know it is a 10 year old car and was expecting problems. but just wanted to check they werent too expencive to fix before i purchase the beasty.

Can anyone can help?

Cheers

Be a man and get yourself down to the clinic!

Seriously though if thats all the AA found wrong with the car then i would buy it before someone else does. Im not sure that the AA are all that thorough and wont appreciate what a rarety the willliams is. Get it checked out at buy a specialist or print off the guide from here take a long haynes manual and check it yourself even if it takes all day coz once the moneys handed over thats it!

the play in the steering is a new steering rack needed, part is about £130 and about 2hrs labour fitting

A new steering rack for a Williams is more than £130, a new one for the 16v from Renault is £210+ (inc vat), and unlike the 16v, you have to get them from Renault.

BTW, Renault havent got any Willy racks in the whole of Europe at the moment, they are having to go to the manufacturer to get them. Rajk has been waiting nearly 3 weeks for his rack & Renault promised 10 days!.

What sort of mileage are we talking here? It would be unusual on a premium price low mileage one, but par for the course on a more miley one.
