I changed my battery recently and encountered lots of problems since. I have put a couple of threads about the problems but it all came to a head today when I was driving to the supermarket and a whole list of electrical faults started.
First my radio cut out, then my ABS light and traction control light appeared, then my airbag light closely followed by the service light, handbrake light and the speedo died etc etc. Basically all the electrical systems were failing so i pulled over and turned my engine off.
I tried to start my car again but got nothing. Luckily I still had a booster pack in my boot from when my original battery died but this didn't work either so i had to call my brother. We tried to jump start it but his battery didn't have enough guts to turn my engine over, the voltage was dropping to around 9 volts when i tried to fire up.
So we called the AA as my brother luckily had breakdown cover that would even cover me the technician diagnosed a dead alternator which was only kicking out around 8-9 volts instead of the 13-14 volts it should. He gave my battery some charge and I attempted to drive it home with most electrical systems off except for side lights and what ever else is running in the background. After 3 miles electrical faults started happening again and my dash light went out and sidelights so I pulled over and got towed the last half a mile.
I have recently spent £500 to have the cambelt replaced and now i need to get my alternator repaired as i cant afford a brand new one. How much is it to get a garage to take it out and fit a new one? Hoping that it is not as much labour as the cambelt although it is very close to it and the front end may need to come off again for access?
Never a dull moment when you own an RS Clio it would seem
