Aftermarket 4-2-1 on a 172

  Clio 172
Hi there im having my year 2000 172 tuned at the mo and i bought a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and decat pipe from ebay. The garage rang me yesterday and said it will not fit properly its touching the floor of the car just where it comes down and under! Has any one else bought an aftermarket manifold and fitted it or should i get a 182 4-2-1 will this fit or would it be best to beat the bit up a bit thats touching and wrap the manifold in heat resistant tape?? HELP!!!

Fit the 182 one if you must, been there, done it and won't be doing it again but the genuine item has got to be better than the shiny eBay number.

Nope. You'll need a specific adapter pipe/cat from 182 manifold to 172 catback exhaust. Ktec do sell them.

The garage has said with the work im doing in the engine cams matched inlet aftermarket ecu and dyno custom map it will make a difference to put the 4-2-1 on the car. Im only taking advise do u guys not think its worth it then although i may aswell do it now as they have had to remove the subframe steering rack etc so i might aswell get one on it they think with my setup i will make about a 10hp difference and later this year i want to put itbs on too and they get more gains with the 4-2-1

I mapped porkies the other day at 212bhp on a 172 exhaust manifold and IMHO that manifold wasnt particuarly restricting it.
Depends what power you are going for.

I would be utterly amazed on any moderate spec engine that you saw 10bhp from changing to a 182 setup, TBH I would be amazed if you even notice the difference at all if you drove the two back to back, you're going to be talking very small gains as they both work very well.

I went from the 172 manifold to a 182 item and it's definately an improvement. Changing cat/decat for MOT time is alot easier aswell.

Yes. From experience not from reading about it. I only did it as I snapped my cat and thought why not. Would never have done it otherwise.

The significant advantage of the 182 setup IMHO is if you want to be able to have a car on during MOT, and a decat on for trackdays, as its far easier to swap them around on the 182 setup.

Thats the only reason I would personally do the swap on a road going car TBH

Yeah fully agree, turns it into a 10 minute job. However I've now seen something that goes onto the 172 manifold and has a flange I. The same place as a 182 cat which seems a decent compromise. Still not decided if I should cut up a cat and get flanges welded on or not so that I can swap between the 2. Running a decat just now as mots aren't too much of a problem.
