Aftermarket Steering Wheels

  E91 M Sport

Has anyone got any recommendations for a replacement steering wheel for the mk1 v6/172? The original wheel is far too big, and reminds me of my parents Scenic (at least that looks like a bus). Would a smaller wheel help create a more direct feel when cornering?

I dont want a new one to look too out of place, so I will consider any decent brand as long as the colour matches the interior, although I would prefer an alcantara finish.

Are the fitting kits the same for any clio, or does the v6 mk1 have a different fitment?

Does anyone have any recommendations for good steering wheel retailers?

Thanks.

I had that OE steering wheel in my old megane and it was not nice at all. Unfortunately (like my megane) the dashboard is an awkward colour (mainly greeny/blue) to match with an after-market wheel that will still look right.

Best i could find was the model below. Its a MOMO Jet - if you get it, get the version form Ripspeed as its in black/grey, has the carbon inserts in a greyish colour and the alloy is left bare - matches fairly well IMO. The versions direct from MOMO are either all back or all silver (both below).

Hope this helps.

Hey Stu, why are you selling? Do you like OE wheel in the V6? ;)

Thanks for the pointers u33db. The Jet is one of the best looking wheels, Ill see if I can find a pic of the bluey one.

Will any momo wheel feel like a better size than the current one? I notice that a lot of them come in 320 or 350mm versions.

So are you not bothered about losing the airbag then?

Also if i was to change the steeringwheel in my car would i have to tell the insurance company about it? Do you think it would put the insurance up?

Cheers Mandy. They seem pretty competitive. They mention the boss kit for Clio, 03/98> - Airbag , I take it this would apply to the 2002 V6 as it still falls under the Mk1 umbrella? Does it have exactly the same steering wheel as the mk1 172?

Not too bothered. I had a chat with my car, and it agreed that if I wore my seatbelt I could lose the airbag ;)

"Errr....you mean this steering wheel isnt standard?" But I guess if I told them, they would probably try and get some money from me, purely because there is a safety aspect to having the airbag so therefore the risk increases, etc.

i suppose if you have 4 point safety harness you dont really need a front airbag ? but then again youd need bukets seats for that and then you lose the sides :( still hell of a lot of weight saving from no airbag wheel, two sides gone and lighter seats !!

i have to agree i feel soooo trapped inside my clio sometimes as its really small (im only 5.7-5.8ft/0. if i had seats that were lower and did without that massive steering wheel (seems bigger in MKII) i would feel more at home.

not to sure on the boss kit as mine is a mk1 clio but i would of thought it would be the same . if it wasnt i would of thought there would be a specific one for yours on their website try emailing motorsportworld theve allways answered my emails quickly when ive been just enquiring . aswell i didnt know what size to go for and i took a chance and went for the smaller one cause the biggar one was neary nuff the same size as my standard clio one . i like having the smaller wheel now :)

Momo Fighter! Just remember, no more airbag? Is a new stering wheel worth dying for?
Looking good. Lets not tempt fate eh? ;)

Almost sold on the idea now, except I cant find any wheels from momo or sparco that match the clios interior. The momo silverjet might work, but it might look a bit chav. Might play it safe and go for a black one...

Hey Stu, the colour I was talking about was the Nology car.

No mods, hmmmm, mine might say the same, but I think because Ive come from the FRP with a real small wheel, I just cant get on with this one. I like the feeling of flicking the wheel without having to feed it

you best ask your insurance company before you buy one . if you do get one i recommend you buy a snapoff kit aswell gives you piece of mind knowing that theres no steering wheel on your car so know one can pinch your car

Thing is a lotus doesnt have airbags ?? also the reason they were invented was to stop fat americans flying through the windscreen becuase they refused to put their seat belts on. If your small and sit very close to the wheel you can do some serious damage to yourself. due to the fact the wheel sticks out so much because of the coloumn im far too close for comfort even when i have the seat so i strech for 3rd and im a not totally migified 5.8" .
