Agency transmissions, average rebuild cost?

  Ph1 172 (titanium)
Will be taking a jc5 speedo drive box to them in a couple if weeks.
Just wondering what people have been charged for a rebuild. Just so I can have an average idea.
Thanks people

I spoke to him on the phone when my box exploded at 70mph
and he thinks the most anyone should realistically spend on a JC5 130 rebuild would be £350,
that of course assuming it's not absolutely f*cked and only useful as a doorstop.

The box I'm buying is supposed to be a good one. Came off a ph1 at 56000ish miles. Working fine. But will get rebuilt for peace of mind.

bugger me, I got charged a lot more than that for a JC5 014 williams box. and it leaked like hell.

we're up around £400-£500 on the really bad ones (knackered hubs, selectors, all syncos, all bearings)

The thing is he was quoting me that price on the gearbox you swapped for me,
the one where the fluid was a weird colour and was full of pieces of cogs,
I even explained to him what had happened to it aswel. :S

Maybe he was quoting me a price based on a working box or something.

I know the one. I weighed it in. I'm just not believeing all the low prices everyone throws around are what they actually pay. Also he forgot to mention VAT to me at any point until i got the invoice with the box back, so it cost even more than i was expecting. and yes, i mean i was told a total, gave card details and paid, and then vat was added, so more taken that i was expecting. That really pissed me off. Whole experience left a bad taste to be honest, but that's no different to any other gearbox reconditioner I've dealt with.

Think the 350 price is for a strip of a working box with little or no problems - replacing the consumables only. Called them a while ago for mine, strip down and check for over winter with no gearbox problems. I didn't ask re VAT though...

  monaco blue 172 ..
Mine went last night on my 172 been quoted 150 to remove and refit . Then inbetween that have the box refurbished ...... There is a place near me called allgears .......or would agency be best. ..... How much is it to send a gearbox

I spoke to him earlier about some boxes I need doing, he reckoned 100 ish for labour to pull them apart and back together (each), and then parts cost on top of that.
Sounded pretty fair to me, was going to do them myself but i really dislike building gearboxes so for that money its never worth the hassle especially as im on a fairly tight schedule with a couple of the cars they are for.

He didnt mention VAT at all to me, but no doubt that is just cause he is mainly used to dealing with the motor trade who are VAT registered anyway so Im sure he isnt trying to con people, as of course it only tends to be the tax dodging or very small back street garages that arent VAT registered anyway so he probably just expects most people to be able to claim it anyway. So if you are approaching as an individual then work on the basis you will need to add it.

He had a very good knowledge of the JC5 in particular, and lots of experience doing people on here's, so certainly better option than picking on a random local re-conditioner Imho who might not be familiar with some of their individual quirks, its a pain in the arse putting boxes in these cars really so you dont want to have to do it twice cause the person is learning on the job

He rebuilt 7 on monday alone. All CS members. One was ours from the race car.

hmm.

not sure that a 1 hour rebuild is what I really want TBH, would like the job doing properly, but I guess if he does these so often he can probably rattle through them very quickly so I will try not to be put off by that statement!

Lol. No one is put off by Freds ability to do 5 cambelts in a day.

He doesnt work alone and they are pretty simple boxes. Ive never heard of any complaints.

In fact one box was broken when it arrived back at the lads house. Pallet was smashed so clearly the courier dropped it. Agency rebuilt it again foc

Its quite scarey when you watch someone who is really familiar with these cars how easy they make it look, I find it quite a pain of a job to do with the engine in the car but mike from MWM is the same, he rattles through it so quickly that it just looks trivial.

Cool, like I said, I wont let me put if off sounding like they are done too quick versus all the good feedback.

Mine are actually all working boxes, just need quaiffes putting into a couple and final drives swapping in a couple from one to another etc

I used go rebuild Transit MT75 boxes in about 1+1/2 hours. Used to do at least 2 a week when i was at Ford. Could do an engine swap in 4 hours as thats all i did was Transits. Doesnt mean its a rush job. In fact id say its better as less likely to make mistakes on unfamiliar things.

Hes got all the tools, all the bits and hundreds of years experiance. What more do you need?

Agreed totally mate, hence my comments about I wouldn't just go to some random gearbox recon place that have only ever done a couple, far better someone who is familiar with them.

  172 Race Car
Thats why i chose to use him in the first place. I rang every gearbox place within 60miles of me and was impressed with his knowledge. He did a brilliant job with our first racecar box so We recommended him to a few people on the forum and over the last 4 years hes done loads (got to be in the hundreds now) for CS members. Not just Clios either. Did a few Pug and Ford boxes too iirc

Good enough for me mate.

Just need to sort out some crownwheels for the quaiffes first though (one ph1 and one ph2) as he said he cant do the machining there if I send it all up in one go so I will get those out of some knackered boxes and then quaiffe to do it (the new one comes with the machining free anyway so only need to pay for one thankfully)

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Yeah they wear together as a pair.
Thankfully as one will be a phase 1 (taller gearing for turbo) and one will be a ph2 (shorter gearing for the Williams lump) it won't be possible to confuse them anyway.

I picked up a box from him on a Sunday morning, Chip.

From his house.

Ah well at least its an option if leaving it there to sort, but I was kind of hoping the mrs could arrange to drop off in the morning and pick up later on and then its only one lot of fuel, im stingy like that, lol
