air filter/induction kit difference?

as you can tell i know naff all about this kind of thing, basically what benefits does an induction kit give you to an upgraded air filter?

ive been lookin at air filters for around £40 but most induction kits are over £100.

will i still get different sound and performance from an kn air filter or is it really worth paying the extra for an induction kit for my 1.4 16v.

cheers

been reading up a bit about the 172 dnt know if its the same for yours but basically these induction kits can end up sucking in more hot air then cold resulting in a very slight loss in power , only 1-2hp ,

iam just gonna get a air filter rather then whole kit

do a search quite a bit on here bout induction kits mate

^^^ Then you didn't read up enough about them . If you did you'd find that most people run cold air feeds from either the front grill or down in the original postion of the oem air feeds .

Induction Kit:- Adds noise on acceleration. Probably wont help power if its an open IK, as youll get heat soak (suck in warm air)

Replacement Filter Element (aka Panel Filter):- Not much difference. Makes throttle response a little sharper, maybe adds 1bhp if that.

To be fare, its not really an area thats worth spending lots of money on. You wont get much in the way of power gains from either. Ive had a panel filter and never noticed much difference.

It's basically a matter or preferance. Do you want a noise from it? I wanted the noise of an open filter so I just accepted that I'll not gain, and may lose a bit power but I don't mind cause I'm not bothered about going fast.

I have a K&N 57i kit on my 1.6 16v and the differance from stock was rather big mostly on the response which totaly suck with the stock filter. For best result shield the filter and change the exhaust aswell.

I've got an 8v 1.4i mk2 and fitted a k&n 57i last week (with cod air feed from gril on the drivers side) and am well pleased with it. Noise wise it sounds the nuts. I keep turning the stereo off to be able to hear it properly.

Gains wise I'd read enough threads on here to expect absolutely sod all except maybe a bit of loss from heatsoak but the car definately feels faster. I've been out on the motorway a few times since I fitted it and it seems to reach 70 quicker than it did before. Getting on the motorway off the same sliproad I use everyday you get to know how fast you are going at various points and I'm finding I'm up to speed quicker and there seem to be less flat spots. . I know a certain amount of it is just going to be in my head because it sounds fast and I'm probably driving a bit more aggressively as a result but either way I'm happy with the result and it was fun tinkering about under the bonnet.
