Air Filter Nightmare

  1.6 Ford Focus
Well I finally got around to buying an air filter for my 1.2 8v and got to work fitting it today... Everything was going smoothly until I hit two problems... One was a foolish mistake on my half and the other... I am not so sure what to do about.

First problem was that the standard U bend pipe in my engine that goes from the intake to the air box appears to have another small tube coming off it going somewhere else. What is this for? I thought that my engine didn't need to have one of these? I have seen pictures of the exact same engine with the same type of filter I am trying to fit and it doesn't have this pipe.

Second, foolish, problem was the silicone pipe I bought... I made a mistake of buying a 2.5" to 2.75" pipe, which wasn't a problem until I went to fit the end to the engine... the intake pipe is 2"! not 2.5"!

Pictures of the extra small tube from the U bend and the unexpected size difference...

that would be the oil breather pipe.
put one of those breather filters on it and leave it to vent under the bonnet, will be fine!!
might want to think about getting some carb cleaner to clean up the tb though before you refit the new filter!!

What? Wait you have lost me... I thought my model did not need to have a breather on it. Where would the breather filter go? On the actual tube coming off the pipe or the other end that comes out the engine, wherever that may be?

I am not sure where all that grease came from but yeah I am intending on cleaning that up when I get the right parts.

Every car no matter the engine size/type has a breather hose on it for the cam cover ( i think that's the reason for it )

All the grease/oil comes from the breather gets thrown into the intake pipe and sucked back into the engine pretty much !

On a side note i loved how loud my old 1.2 8v sounded with an open filter !

Ah right! That explains why its connected to the U bend pipe.

What would be the best thing to use? I have another pipe on the way that doesn't have this extra tube on it... If I just stuck an oil breather filter on the end of the pipe, would that not end up getting clogged up with oil that's being chucked down the tube?

You have actually put some of my confidence back into doing this saying that yours sounded good! I would hate to do all this and discover it sounded rubbish.

yes it will eventually get clogged up with oil vapours/road dust but just clean it out with carb cleaner a few times a year!!
make sure you cable tie it upright though or it will drip oil out of the breather filter rather than returning down the brather pipe if that makes sence??!!
