Alpine CDE 9850RI

I'm looking at upgrading my soundsystem to a decent head unit with an I-pod connection and this seems to fit the bill http://http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cde9850ri-ipod-full-speed-p-4679.html

Has anybody had any experience of these players and are they any good? Also what is needed to connect it with the stalk controls?

I'm also looking at buying a pr of pheonix gold octane R5.0 component speaker for the front and a pr of pheonix gold octane R5.0 coaxial speakers for the back... Are these speakers anygood and will the headunit power them ok?

thanks, Martin

don't want a sub taking up room in the boot, plus my cars slow enough as it is without extra weight... I'm hoping the component speakers will produce enough base?

9850Ri is a 2006 head unit, the new ones are CDE-9881 (either RB or R suffix, only difference is the illumination colour). The new units are £160 with the iPod "full speed" lead. New units have 2 pre outs for amp connector (9850ri had only 1) and apparently better SQ too. I've ordered a 9881 and some Boston Acoutsic comp's, will post the results when they are installed. I wouldn't bother upgrading the rear speakers TBH. How often do you go to a concert and stand with your back to the stage ?

I like the idea of the 9850RI unit charging your I-pod when it's plugged in to the headunit, does the 9881 do this?

thanks Martin

Yes, it's a "full speed" unit just the same. The only difference is that the full speed lead is bundled with the 2006 unit and it's sold seperately in 2007. I put the head unit on on Sunday and it's great. I need help with the rest of the install due to lack of knowledge though ! For the record I'm fitting the Alpine H/U with stalk adaptor and iPod, Boston Acoustic components up front, an amp under a false boot floor and some Genesis 6 x 9 Subs in an Auto Acoustics parcel shelf as I don't want to lose boot space with a sub enclosure. I can't wait !
