alternator and starter motor fault

hi, what are the chances of the alternator and starter motor breaking at the exact same time?

heres what happend, i went to start the car and the starter just clicked, so i bump started it and drove it home and to a few other places, and its flattend the battery, i charged the battery back up and bump started it and put a mulitmeter on the battery to test the alternator and its not charging at all, it should be at 14v when the engine is running but its only reading 12v and it actually drops in volts slowly, so the starter motor and alternator have just became faulty all of a sudden,

so is this more likely to be a bad earth connection other than the 2 of them breaking at the same time? could someone tell me where the earths are? and how to get to them? i know they are on the gearbox, but where abouts as i had a quick look and couldnt see anything.

any help would be appreciated.

to they fault you have maybe the starter motor doesn't have enuf power going to it due to the alternator not charging it right new alt battery on charge till fully charged with new alternator on you should then be in luck xD

i put another battery that fully charged and was working fine in another car mate, it still didnt start so theres defo a fault with the starter somewhere, i dont want to replace the alternator till im sure its faulty, but a faulty alternator wouldnt explain why the starter is just clicking, they have both just broken at the same time which is quite unlikely i would have thought.

btw it just clicks once, its not the repeated clicking noise that it makes when you have a flat battery, should have said that in the first post
