alternator fault, earth?

hi there, where is the earth thats for the alternator? my alternator was working, then it wasnt, then it started working again, and now its not again, could this be a bad earth? or just an alternator on its way out? and also my starter motor isnt working aswel, both happend at the same time, but i bump started it to check the alternator, will the faulty starter be related to the faulty alternator? ive been at it for days trying to find the fault and had no luck, and dont want to spend money on unnecessary parts

any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok mate cheers, i tested the alternator at the actual alternator and i get over 14v no problem, however at the battery there is only 12v and constantly dropping, also there is no live getting to the starter solenoid, so could there maybe be a short somewhere and its causing the alternator not to charge the battery?

sounds like a brake in the power wire from the alternator to battery wire if you have 14v at the alternator and 12v at the battery.
