Am I the only one ?

  Clio 182 cup FF
Having looked at this forum every day since buying my Clio 182 FF. I know exactly what everyone is going to say. But I just want to see if I'm the only one that is temporarily ignoring everyones advice.

I bought an 05 plate, 38k miles, Clio 182 FF. Registered in May 2005. It is still yet to have it's cambelt or aux belt changed. Now, having read everybody's comments. I a, constantly worried now that my belt is just going to bail, and leave me with a £grand bill. Am I the only 1 that hasn't yet changed the cambelt when advised ? Please can I have all your views. I am going to get it done. But not any time soon. Due to funds. ( please don't reply " it'll be cheaper than it going ..... Etc ). And is there any way of checking its condition without having to pull the car apart ? And are there any sounds that I need to listen out for that will give me a heads up that it needs replacing ?

Everyones feedback is hugely appreciated.

I'm afraid there's only one answer that you'll get really with a thread like this:

If you can't afford to service it, you can't afford the car.

It's up to you at the end of the day, and I'm sure you're aware of the risks you're taking.

It'll just let go, there won't be any warning. The warning is written in your service book.

You've asked us not to say anything else obvious, so therefore I have nothing left to say :)

Thing i always wonder is, how long has the car been sat before it was bought, and how old was the belt before it was even put on the car.

Lol. I don't like my chances. FFS. All I can bloody think about when driving the thing Is the bloody cambelt. I'm going to get it changed. Cheers all.

Anyone know any specialist around the Lancashire area. And what kinda price am I looking at to do cambelt and aux belt ???

  Clio 172
Mine had only got 51k on the clock when i bought it. Loads of receipts came with the car but none for the belt. So it was the 1st job I had done rather than take any chances. The old belt was in good condition when I looked at it but id rather have the peace of mind knowing its done. Its always the 1st job i have done when buying a car

Around £400 at a specialist seems to be the going rate.

I recommend you get a new dephaser fitted while you're at it... It'll add another £120 to the bill, but all the belts need doing again if it goes shortly after like a lot have.

Don't risk it...glad to hear you are going to sort it! My cambelt just 'went' on my Clio 1.2 many years ago...I had 68k on the clock and didn't even think to change the belt at the time. It was a costly repair. Various valves bent or broke that needed to be replaced. Engine rebuild cost just shy of £600 at the time. After the engine rebuild, it just wasn't the same...so I sold it and bought a brand new 182 ... which was immense. Hope you get it sorted soon!

If thats what you was thinking you already knew what the best thing to do was, glad you have come to your senses.

Oh and it'll be cheaper to get it done than fix it if it goes bang :rasp:

My cambelt was the first thing I did, booked it in the day I picked up my car.... Of all the things you could choose to try your luck with, don't make it this one.
The cambelt is something that's easy to forget, you can't see it, you can't hear it and you don't appreciate it.

I've just done the belts and dephaser on mine, the dephaser was £171 from the dealers!! Nearly followed through when the guy told me the price!! Still peace of mind and all that!

If you have some technical know how its not that hard a job to do yourself, I quite enjoyed doing mine and got a sense of satisfaction from doing it. Also use the proper renault engine locking tools. A lad on here lent me his for a small fee, made all the difference.

had my aux belt and tensioners done twice and cambelt once and mine is an 05 car

could you lend £500 of mum/dad maybe for a month or two, better than lending £1k

for some reason it was done at rentech on 38k, again at 60k and again at 75k by danny with the fitting of the cams.

why would it need 3 cambelt changes in such low mileage? what is the renault scheduale time for the cambelt? most modern cars are around 60,000 - 100,000 or 4-10years
so why would this engine require more changes?

if you saw the service history you'd understand, its been serviced a lot! but then again its a v healthy car so it shows good maintenance keeps them healthy.

i think renault say 70k or 5 years whatever comes sooner

It may not have required the changes. My understanding is that what's needed for some other jobs, can make changing the cambelt a no brainer due to the easy access you'd have.

Like if your gearbox was removed for something. Unless you're clutch is recent, while the 'box was out, it would make sense to slap a new one in just to be sure.

having too many services doesn't actually mean its been looked after, on the contrary it could mean the car been used for heavy track sessions and then serviced due to that.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Its not the mileage--- 38k-

Its the fact that the belts & tensioners are 6 years old & over time they perish- at some point irrespective the will perish so much that the belt goes twang or the tensioner seizes-- usually the aux belt one IIRC

best get the belts done for the peice of mind if nothing else

My 182 is a 05 on 45,000 miles and hasn't had the belts done, iv had it 6weeks now, I havnt enjoyed it at all because I have it in the back of my head that's it's going to go. But I went to book it in last Saturday at Worcester Renault and they said it's £849 for the cambelt kit? Is this right? If so I'm saving for a couple more weeks!!
