amd buying ati this week

Interesting.

Macbook Pro's use ATI Radeon cards.. and Intel processors/chipsets.. so, basically, they've done well. It means both AMD and Intel now have a piece of high-end Mac's :)

nah ati are better than nvidia, amd are doing the right thing

ati are a smaller company than nvidia tho

trouble is what will this mean for pc's will amd cpu's become ati only !!

That won't happen, would make no sense to narrow their market. What will probably happen though is that AMD machines using ATI cards will benefit from increased performance because they can introduce better architecture to deal with ATI cards.

A panic reaction? Do you honestly think companies like AMD and ATI have to panic? I think not. I also don't think this is something they're likely to have simply 'slept on'.

yes but nvidia wont really be wanting to release tech info to ati will they with their core logic chips

Like I said, ATI are used in high-end Mac's.. And now Mac's use Intel CPU's/Chipsets, that's quite a large market to just abandon.

I can't see it changing much really..

amd aint doing so well at the mo especially now they have just cut the price of their desktop cpu's by 43% to keep up with intel and its mighty core duo 2

I think the main issue is, AMD will always the "the computer fans" choice.

Look at all the major manufacturers, all dominated by Intel based machines..
Apple have gone Intel... Dell are mainly Intel (do they have any AMD machines? Can't remember if I read something about them using AMD at some point) - and that's two MAJOR computer distributors.

Unless AMD get some large contracts for some large computer manufacturers, I think they'll always be as they are.

dell use amd with the alienware pc's and dell are supposedly brining out opteron based servers

you are right tho amd are the fans choice oh and quite a few super computer builders

Will be interesting to see how it goes, definetly.

My guess is.. it'll stay exactly as it is now. :)

fingers crossed but it would be nice if it did push for some better products from all companies involved rather than the slight upgrades we keep getting

  As father and son....

considering AMD is losing ground in every single division of process production then yes. its rarely the weapon of choice for any job now to be fair.

The opterons are a better option when buying server based cpu's over xeons, why? Lower power, Faster, cheaper.

There desktop chips versus the P4 are a superior architecture until the conroe core 2 duo's come out from intel. But AMD's next chip is already in the pipeline AM2 is just trying ot keep the old architecture going for a while there will be a newer cpu. I mean look how long intel kept the P4 about and AMD were nearly always outperforming it since it came out. the A64's thought were an incredible piece of technology at the time not anymore though.

Currently though AMD are out selling intel and have the majority market share. Intels cpu's are not selling anywhere near as well as they used to reason being cause people have seen they can put together cheaper faster computers than what intel are offering. At one point this year for a few weeks over 81% of cpu's sold had an AMD logo on them.

Currently market is around 50 / 50 between the 2 makers.

lol

cracks me up you lot!!

coming from a man who works for intel i can 110 percent gurantee its not 50/50 for intel and amd

check out the two companys turnovers for a start!! secondally are u comparing the server market? or the home pc? laptop?

intel chips now outperform amd easy peasy!! and use less power

lovely

jubbly

lol

I've got an AMD and Intel PC's... AMD pisses all over Intel for gamers, it's not even debatable. Look at Tom's Hardware reviews, Intel will bring out a new technology and be marginal top dog for a matter of weeks or even days, then AMD bring out something to eclipse it... it's the same cycle and cant see it changing. Intel for apps, AMD for games... As a gamer I'd go AMD every time, complete no brainer, Intel's become old and slow overnight

im willing to bet that AMDS new quad core and its new hypertransport dont stand a chance

ive seen the new new intel chips... all i can say is were back for good..

Intel will be better until AMD get hold of one of their chips. sorry to say but everytime Intel ever bring anything out, AMD always equals or betters it with their next offering. It's been happening since they started and back then they were small and crap. If Intel really knew what they are doing they would have put AMD out of business when they were small, as it stands now Intel just dont have the technology or skill of application to make a processor that AMD cant just better with their next one. It's the same with ATI and Nvidia...

well im afraid i have to disagree here. but cant quote for confidental reasons.... ;)

AMD still dont have there next gen chip ready for a long long time, they havent even got down to our nano level!

intels moto "race ahead" its here to stay!

all i can say is intel could have bought AMD when they first came out but didnt due to "healthy competition"

anyway! as u can imagine i get lots of AMD V intel etc, especially as i ran the woodcrest launch in holland and setup the demos etc! so enough work talk for me! over and out!

^ yeh, for gaming AMD is the choice, esp for overclockers and those building their own rig, you've only to checkout www.overclockers.co.uk forums to figure this, graphics cards is a closer thing, IMHO the AMD ATI merger is great for the consumer

they may not have the technology 'yet' or a working version, but what do you think happens when Intel bring their chip out? It gets reversed engineered and then a couple of months down the line and they have their own version of the technology ready to implement. At work we have the blade centers, we are now moving to AMD based servers, so my old fella's place, so Intel dont have the market share they once did, so things will stay close until people get off the Intel clockspeed bandwagon...

again this is will be my last comment!

the main thing with intel new chip is power per watt NOT just clock speed, check out the stats, the new chip is more powerfull and at max cpu usuage still uses less power than AMD's Operton at IDLE!!!!

if u have a data centre buying the actuall server is 10% of the outlay, the rest is power cost! think of all those savings! u want to be moving to woodcrest my friend!

  A red missile
AMD buying ATI is an act of pure desperation, its the weak bonding with the weak to try and gain some ground over the market leaders. AMD's processor technology is constantly playing catch up, just like ATI are with nVidia, people buy them because they're cheaper, its as simple as that.

This is the same kind of arguement thats raged with the Mac vs Pc thing, Apple have always made hysterical claims that the G3/G4/G5 processor has been significantly faster than its Intel equivalent. It wasn't, we all knew it wasn't, the only people saying it was were Apple and the people who paid through the nose for an inferior machine, then guess what? the next variant of Mac will be Intel based, and what do they say? oh it'll be just the same only much faster. The analogy is similar, people buy AMD because they're cheap, then swear blind they're better.

Fact - PC gaming without spending stupid money - AMD wins hands down for overclocking - checkout ANY of the popular overclocking/gaming sites
ATI v Nvidia - Until very very recently ATI's X1900XTX was better than anything Nvidia had in a single card (except open GL performance)
No desperation, it's a shrewd move that will benefit us the consumer
overclockers.co.uk are the biggest supplier of components for the gaming/enthusiast/home pc builder in europe, they sell more AMD than Intel..................that speaks volumes
