amp to speaker ratio

Am i right in thinking that the speaker needs to be roughly three times the power rating of the amp it's connected to? Contemplating doing my own boot install:S .
Can anyone recommend any books/sites on the subject

Its actually better to have a more powerful amp than the speaker can take. Better to run an amp turned down half way than have it cranked up all the way.

And why would it need to be 3 times the power? That just means you can put more power into it. You can usually put more power into a speaker than its specced to take.

i work to about 80% of the power of the amp to run a speaker at 100%
