Another "my motorsport year" thread

Some of mine from 2008...

Didn't go to any events in January but my friend's dad bought an ex-McRae Focus WRC and I got invited to a test day and got a spin in the car

February... Andrew Burton and Shelley Rogerson sideways on their way to second place on Rallye Sunseeker darn sarf...

Back oop north for the Malcolm Wilson rally in March, David Bogie taking victory in the Corolla...

First round of the off-road championship in April, here's Neil Davey's Pug 206 based machine...

Over to the Isle of Sarah in May, stage 1 of the Manx National rally and local driver George Collister wins the prize for biggest jump...

More off-road action in June, Ben Gott comes in to land at Driffield...

July... more Manx action, this time the Rally Isle of Man... Brian O'Mahony in the S1600 and Adam Gould in the 172.

Didn't do 'owt in August, so into September with a very muddy off-road course in Devon oh yes...

One of the best bits of driving I saw all year, Ieuan Rowlands on full opposite lock during October's Bulldog rally. I've got the in-car from this event and it's fantastic, sideways everywhere

haha no, although I'm not sure he was familiar with Andy's usual technique of cutting the corner, he may have stood elsewhere if he was!

D200. Most of the shots were with 18-200VR lens. Clio S1600 was with Sigma 10-20 as I was perched on top of a wall looking down on the cars. SB800 flash... sometimes use a SB600 remotely as well, but not in the two night shots above.

Top notch stuff, even more so as I was expecting you to say "300mm 2.8" or something along those lines. Hard to pick a favourite, but I would probably go with the Ben Gott shot, great capture.

Do you mind me asking why you went with the 18-200, considering you travel the country shooting motorsport? Clearly it's served you brilliantly, but it wouldn't spring to mind as an obvious choice, where as something like a 70-200 would. Great lens though, hired one for Paris and couldn't fault it.

I have a 70-200 as well, by chance most of my favourite shots are with other lenses though! While the 18-200 has some limitations when the light is poor I like the flexibility of the zoom range. Unlike circuit stuff you may only see the cars two or three times on a rally so the 18-200 gives me a chance to get a "long" shot and also the shot as the car passes right by me i.e. a wider range of shots than using only the 70-200 would give me.

I use the 18-200 for a lot of landscape work too on occasions when carrying two cameras or changing lenses would be a pain.

I don't think I'd cope with a 300mm, I like to be close to the action
