Another valver project N16AMF

  X2 Clio Valvers
Hey guys!

Some of you may have seen my other project on here which came to a sudden halt when my tools went walkies.
Anyhow, since then my girlfriend bought me this for my birthday :D
bb604782f27ed824a8916ea6d341d8d1.jpg

She's in a bit of a state at the moment after the lad I bought it from lost the back end in the rain, span a few times and took a signpost out the ground

760ba121c8a0186cae39b8a0cedeb7b7.jpg

b0989272d9d515a5dbfcc9e9ebbfa916.jpg

Results are;
Fooked O/S front shocker
Smashed N/S rear quarter window
Badly dented rear quarter
Fooked tyres and a bent rear stub/hub.
I know for sure the chassis are still straight and the rear beam is too surprisingly, haven't had a proper look yet as haven't got all necessary tools.
Anyway while I'm saving up for a new welder etc I thought I'd tidy the inside up and sort the electrical niggles,
Central locking doesn't work, reverse lights come on randomly even when it's not in reverse, wiring has been butchered! and the dash has holes drilled in it, so I got a new/second hand dash, cleaned it all and painted it with halfords flexible vinyl paint, here's a pic of the centre console
e1c69d439ba1a953cf498f9c4bd0efcd.jpg
you can see the difference from before and after in that pic, here's the completed one
4acc2935b5ec23d8dda8ccfd522c3225.jpg

Looks like new! I've also done the whole dash in the same colour and done the top dash satin black, I've even painted the torx screws as they were chipped and messy.
I put a new rear quarter glass on it also.
Most recent things I've done are put a magnex on [emoji14]
cad380717f9c040a9cc7db91aa62c75a.jpg
reverse lights [emoji38] sounds great with the decat, and set about removing the old dash and loom for tomorrow as it got dark. That about brings it up to date but I will update as and when. Sorry for the lack of photos, my phones broke so have to borrow the Mrs phone...
Here's a brief list of what needs doing as I'll no doubt come across loads more along the way,
The obvious stuff
Rear quarter and sills, suspension is getting changed for 172 along with box and shafts and rear stub axles, brakes etc,
Door hinge posts needs welding as some tosser couldn't be arsed to undo the 2 torx pins holding the door on so they cut it off!
5ed880f20a366b8788261e48a1a427c1.jpg

Engine needs a bit of work (smokey on over run) interior is getting replaced with full leather as that's what it should have in from the factory and then repainting. Doesn't sound too much but as said more will add itself onto the list! Sorry again for the lack of photos and it been a bit muddled up! Will update over the next few days.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yesterday I left the car looking like this

b308f2ea3ec61160af19da6eb29a85a7.jpg

So today I went out with the intention so fully strip the inside and refit the new dash and loom etc, roughly 20 mins later she was looking like this
78c3da776b2b2343f87c7306c4f5ed84.jpg

Also dropped off the jack lol. Luckily it hasn't caused any damage.
I was surprised to see no rot! Only surface rust from what I can see.

So yeah, not much really happened today except for the gearbox mount has been changed as, I'll let the pics tell lol
c4316862df1ecaf3088563667d2c372b.jpg

e9ee7fff7e76cda9708ca92d8c1f158c.jpg

I've removed the loom (just need to pull it through the car now) also struggled with that as somebody had managed to squeeze some of it through the wholes in the chassis rails :/
Discovered why the power steering shat itself, when the gearbox mount snapped it allowed the gearbox to drop on the pas pipe, not sure as to why it ran under the gearbox...
Here's the reason I'm changing the loom
5fb7f8b8d01d8098852345d1b9fe050e.jpg
cut wires and there's more within. I honestly don't know why people do this, it appears that whoever did it cut the wires and taped them back together! Just twisted and taped, that explains the intermittent issues with starting etc.
Anyhow, that's today's progress. Tomorrow I will be having more Time to work on her so should progress a bit more! Thanks again for the comments.

Wow quite a project you've taken on there!!
Where you getting the new panels from? There rare as rocking horse poo!
Have you thought about building it into valver/172 hybrid with the 172 engine suspension etc.
Whatever you do good luck:smiley:

  X2 Clio Valvers
Lol. A few people say that. You should see my other one, at least 60% of it it needs replacing lol! I've managed to source a used rear quarter off beaniemoo from c16valver but I'm also modifying some pov spec ones. Will upload pics of them once they're fully done.
Tbh I don't like 172s/182s, only good thing is the wider track, better steering etc. Other than that I think they are characterless. Besides there ain't too many original valvers about now and that's what I'm aiming for :) thanks for the good luck matey (y)

Today's update.

Sadly not got any photos but will get some tomorrow,
The dash is finally out! As is the carpet, underlay etc, they were soaking so they're hung over the fence to dry lol. Also come across yet another poor bodged sill repair, not sure how they're still in bussiness, you'll be able to tell more when I get pics tomorrow but basically they've cut part of the old sill off, put the new one on top, tack weld it it about 5 times then put loads of filler on, no rust prevention or anything so it's just rusted back through, luckily it's not too bad and hopefully I've caught it early enough as from what I can see the very bottom (about half inch upwards) is rusting on the inner sill. I've also took the seats out (obviously I had to lol) to give them a good clean along with the carpet. Leather interior will be going in soon though. Tomorrow I'm going to fit the b&m shifter, the cat back magnex (already put the back box on)
Here's a few pics of the dash that will be going in when the inside has been stripped back to bare metal and repainted (sorry for crap pics)

36c4c709c85993675f71964e4d9d03e3.jpg

Needs another coat of paint yet but it's looking better, also need to redo the slat type things in the top dash as the paint has shrunk as I forgot to clean em lol.
That's it for today, will try upload pics tomorrow along with a few updates

I know what you mean about character, although I've never driven a valver, my Williams always put a smile on my face, whether you were driving on the limit or pootling around

I just love valvers and wiliams lol.. like you said no matter how your driving them they're just so much fun. Wheras as the 172 is a bit boring, it's like you give it some and it's like nothing happens for a while, then you come to a corner and the electronics go all grandad in you lol. My naples valver was chipped up though and when you pressed the fast pedal in that it took off like a rocket lol. So miss driving them :(

Small update...

The past few days the car has been fully stripped (dash, carpet and underlay etc) I have installed the new dash along with the inside loom. She's looking like thus

0d3a55c4c2d9f1e9e41708586ee1180b.jpg

Also fitted the b&m
9a9a4cbebc7a5c1d09aeac7f7dff912a.jpg
sorry for poor photos. I have to use the front camera on my phone, technology eh lol.
Here's a pic of the bodged sill repair
f77b0745f1b97db95aab4edb0a6a0622.jpg
you can see 5 black dots, they are spot welds, the rest is just filler. You can feel along the bottom of the quarter where it's cracking. Bodging gits. The front end is also stripped (bonnet, wings and bumper) and I've sorted the butchered engine loom. Will upload pictures later on.

  X2 Clio Valvers
Bit of an update, sadly more words than pictures.

I've sorted the electrics out! Central locking works and the key unlocks it, thus disarming the immobiliser :) I'm now using my chipped ecu, pops and bangs ;) fitted the magnex exhaust system, replaced the pas fluid bottle (old one was cracked and hacky) cleaned around that area, nice n xerus now lol. Took the rocker cover off as it was painted a horrid reddy orange colour, looks very clean inside. Polishing my other rocker cover up to put on. Here's a poor pic of the cams etc. Should just be able to make out how clean they are

7a2fe432e981e1690fe84a8e845ea14c.jpg

Also gave the back end a good check over, rear beam isn't bent!! Yay. Stub is though which doesn't matter as 172 stub axles will be going on.

The roof lining was a bit tatty, fag burns and mucky patches and a few cracked areas so brought it in to fibreglass it, also it will add strength to it.

Bit of an update here too. Not much though I'm afraid. Engine had been painted in various places without the parts even been removed, looked like this

.Took the rocker cover off and brought it in to polish, it's looking pretty good at the minute and I'm still in the first stage

  X2 Clio Valvers
Update time.
Yesterday I met coops as he delivered my longtime purchased phase 1 goodies lol. He's a genuinely nice chap :) big thumbs up to him for the stuff and taking me for a blast in the track car...
Anyhow, here's the phase 1 bits fitted

the tape is temporary until I get the new pins for inside..
Everything is working now more or less, just the inductors aren't and the reverse lights are still stuck on. Think that's down to the switch tbh as I've checked all the earth's and everything else seems fine too.

  X2 Clio Valvers
Bit of progress! Got the new dash installed.

Bl**dy Hell that's anybodies worst nightmare. How the chuffin hell did the previous owner do that.

What tuning chip have you used.
Would be nice to give mine a light tune up when I get mine back on the road.

Flol. It was just before Christmas so it was a bit slippery and the car has a bold tyre so I think that could be part of the reason, the back end stepped out on him and he over corrected sending him onto a grass verge but taking a signpost with him lol. I'll try get a few photos of the actual crash site.
The chip is unbranded mate, couldn't tell you what brand or map is on there etc as it was there when I bought my other valver.

Overdue update!
Not really had a lot of spare time and the weather has been naff, and I've had no phone to take pics from but got one now so here's some bits of what I've done...

So I thought after I'd removed the rear beam I'd take a look around to see what rust or rot there is, surprisingly it is only rust a lot of it,you can see the rot though which tbh isn't bad at all for a mk1!
I'm going to be ditching the reserve tank (or at least I think I will be, haven't made my mind up yet)
Proceed to get all the crusty crappy rust off with a wire wheel on my drill ;-) then pit some epoxy on there until I can afford my welder :)

didn't photo all of it but you get the idea, this is the beast of a welder I'm getting
535aa0b3ac58d750672f7eccd1c841c7.jpg
but the 185 version.
Also decided that when I fit 1*poo running gear I'm going lsd. Need to start saving up for tools and parts etc.

Here's a pic of the f*cked up bodge repair to the sill
00caef781b2996c09fb31e7960471f66.jpg

Ground through all the filler to find that, can't even call it a weld, it's more like a bead of sh*t! No penetration whatsoever and isn't on both bits of metal.
baadbb300efde1b33778d0fd3c178285.jpg
not flanged, welded or anything, and none of this had any sort of primer on either, hence it rusted, and here's the inner wheel arch repair.........
63de6d41772f5b485b8a6eb2a4068bda.jpg

Anybody want some bondo? About a ton of the stuff? Lol. Can't see why anyone would do this really. Anyway by the by, I'm gonna be doing it all right.
Will update as and when I can :)

Today's antics!
bba637c68a83c6de784439a6c219ebff.jpg
rear beam removed from Naples shell, one of the bolts ceased half way, would tighten or loosen no more so out came the drill, with a homemade grinder attachment
3e9227bec2d083803e54f3d1a935a6fb.jpg
was daringly close to the fuel tank but no fire wad caused so it all good
d79d4a55bc22812e5fd5f2bae5453b55.jpg
and the rear beam is now provisionally fitted to AMF,
54caddfddddf934a72dd06fa2fe8c024.jpg

NO MORE BENT WHEEL! YAY LOL.
0abe606dd6fbe1ab9a8498b48bf3cf07.jpg
sorry about pics. Got dark.
Packed up and left her looking like this
787dcecce78e13d68f6796974b683fb9.jpg

Sheet is my window as french electrics are naff and I can't wind my window up lol.
More tomorrow

  X2 Clio Valvers
Rear beam is a little closer to been properly fitted
782b1bd865ebf17ccd8577fdb0851d51.jpg

Dropped off the jack twice too, not had much luck today, lining the rear beam up was an utter ballache. Still got to conext the brake lines up and handbrake cables. I cleaned up the rear beam mounting nuts and bolts as they looked like this
bf788018e520369ecdc129a8fd82d34b.jpg
cleaned with wire wheel on drill again (only photo'd one)
ed5aad53e2c99cd6dcf2712297ee2bb8.jpg

And I forgot how low the Naples valver was lol. Ridiculous lows tbh.

e1a2e810b88cfa8e8f1d3ff415cfb965.jpg
that about sums up today's progress guys, may update over the weekend if I get chance but if not will definitely be next week, will be getting some paint for the rear beam, (should've waited I know lol)
So things to do now are;
Cut out all rust/rot, weld in new metal,
Replace nearside rear quarter and one wheel arch,
Repair rust on offside arch, replace sills
swap the bulkhead over from the Naples shell,
Sort engine out (loom etc) and I'm sure I'll come across more I'm pretty sure of it.
More to come

I love your determination, really inspiring mate :)
Thanks mate :)
Subscribed, fair play buddy thats a lot of work. My mate used to own the car in 2007, it was a nice car :)

Thanks mate. It was a nice car when my mate had it before he had an argument with a signpost lol. She's coming along well now. Is that KingBass's Clio?
She is still fairly solid and clean in places lol. But somebody bodged the sill aND chassis rails are slightly rotten. Nothing that can't be fixed though, should see my Naples ;)

Mine has just gone in for bodywork and a full hit of '432. After that, I'm taking all the running gear and pipe work off so I can under seal the shiz outta it.

Nice to see other people doing Valvers for the love of them, rather than trying to ride the trend of doing them up thinking they'll make thousands selling it on after. (Wrong retro morons)

I'm starting to save up for my tools now but hopefully shouldn't be too long before I can start welding new metal in :) 432 looks lovely when fairly fresh pained or even just looked after and waxed etc.
Once I've got all the underseal off I'm pretty sure there's gonna be f*ck loads of rust as the underseal is built up in about 3 layers! Never a good sign.

not really done much tbh but I'll share what I have, cleaned these up then primed them up, ready for hammerite.

already gave it 2 wet coats, but now I'm thinking what would look best? Xerus grey with yellow bits or Xerus grey and orange bits? I know I'll be doing my naples bits yellow but can't decide on this one :/

Not much to update on the clio really as been helping a mate with his civic project :)

All I've really don't is ordered this to go with the phase 1 goodies

But as you can probably tell it's smaller than it should be which confused me as it's got a genuine Renault part number on it so I'm guessing it's either not a bonnet badge, it's not really genuine Renault or its not meant for a clio.

I've started stripping the drive train off too as I'm going 172 so she's sat like this at the minute

And I've started drilling spot welds out.
That's about it but I thought I'd share lol.

Not updated in a while as I've not really been home and I've been putting off the project till I get a welder etc...
Anyhow I was getting frustrated with looking at it just sat there so found myself something to do :)
All I've really done is some bondo work. Filled in the holes that held the badges onto the boot (didn't just straight bondo them either, I used JB marine weld stuff that dries like metal and tbh is pretty good stuff!

Doesn't look pretty but had to layer it up and then flatten it with a grinder or file. After it was bondo'd, feathered and primed it looks thusly

Also on the bonnet and wings, either side there was holes where someone must have fitted bonnet pins or something. I did the same to these

didn't photo the other stuff, but used the same method as per the boot.
The OS front wing needed a fair bit of work so it was rubbed down, far enough to see highs and lows then filled and primed

needs another coat of primer yet but it's all flush and once painted you'll never tell it was filled up. I'm basically trying to get as many bits as possible off the list and save the fun part for last.
I've also been busy setting up my own company which is nearly complete. A.K.M AUTOMOTIVE ;-)

will update more once I've done more

Just spotted this thread, awesome work

You have reminded me that I need to find a course on learning to weld, so I can fix my rotting driveway ornament... lol :grinning:

If you've got the headlining out, I would look at replacing the sunroof rubber / sealing it up / welding a plate over the bloody thing - mine has only ever leaked!

due a bit of an update i think! i now have a mig welder so the good stuff can start soon!
uploadfromtaptalk1447253801501.jpg

its an old school murex tradesmig 160 made in 1986, bought it not working and fixed it, its now working and welding beautifully. me and my girlfriend are relocating soon and i will be renting a garage/unit to not only carry on with my 2 but to get on the business ladder!

sorry its not much of an update but they will start flowing soon.

ps- thanks for the responses, i thought about welding up the sunroof but i want them to be original as possible, cant wait to get rid of the tin worm on them though! im improvising with good metal from my naples shell (roof and other salvagable metal etc)
will try to get some bits done and post photos up :)
