Is it DVDs you're trying to view - and if so, are they originals or copied ones?

Sorry - being a mong there - didn't read the post correctly. These are vids off the internet that you're trying to view?

it's an ftp site where the file has been removed....if say for example u put a video file on ur desktop and watched it then it would be fine, delete the file and goto recent viewings and then that message will come up...

either that or you could be missing codecs, try loading up windows media player 10.
had a simial thing to ths once.
it shouldnt happen if its links on the web.
you could RMB click on the link, save to disk, then see if you can open it from your local HDD. if you carnt, then its defo the codecs etc that you will need to replace.
Hope this helps ;)

Yeah, and that worked, but it makes me download the whole file taking ages

Is local hdd just my hardrive?

That error is as David says and it's not codecs because another message comes up when it's not playable because of a codec.

perhaps not the best solution but WM Player isn't great anyway but why not install winamp and use that as the default player and see what happens? You can always uninstall it....

thats true, but by installing a 3rd party application you add another variable into the problem. the thing is, as a default, WM should play most files ok. installing another application may help.... but you never really diagnose the problem ;) depends on if your happy to do a quick fix or not.

But yeh giv it a go

as has been mentioned, it's somthing to do with the locatio of the file. try getting a movie trailer of yahoo.com and see what happens if it works it's something to do with the actual files ur trying to view. The codec issue would present a different error. Furthermore at the bottom of the screen around where the volume control is in media player it will give u some info on whats happening, let us know what it says when u have a chance

Trough yahoo, the same message comes up, and by the volume control it just says ready!

Does microsoft have a help centre you can email?

ok, heres a long shot:
open up wmp, click on tools, then options, then player tab. Have a look at player settings, and tick "connect to the internet (overrides other commands) close WMP then try the link again.

if not, we can try setting IE to automatically detect settings "tools/internet options/connections tab/LAN" and tick "automatically detect settings"

one of these should fix it, Especially if the file can play locally :D

That's magic thanks Stuart.
It was the "connect to the internet" Tab.

All is working ok now.
Thanks again
