Any TV Aerial Specialists About?!?

Post away I'll try and help.

Ace!

I've copied my post from AVForums (zero replies):

"I'm hoping someone might be able to help with a digital signal issue which reared its ugly head today .

I live in a semi detached house with its own aerial (fixed to the roof). The aerial feeds one socket, in the lounge. I have a aerial cable going from the socket to a sky HD box then out to the main TV (RF1 and HDMI) and then to a second TV upstairs (RF2).

This morning when I switched the main TV on the digital signal quality was non existent - PQ was very bitty/grainy with no sound and some channels couldn't be found at all. I tried the TV upstairs which was also stuttery but not as bad as the main TV. I then wondered whether the issue was the sky box so I removed it from the equation by trying a direct feed from the master socket to the main TV. More channels after a re-tune but unfortunately PQ was still very stuttery. I then connected the same cable to the upstairs TV (it's a long 25m cable) and redid the test. After a re-tune most of the channels were ok with the exception of a couple that were still stuttery (film 4 for example).

I unscrewed the master socket and it looks fine.

Main TV signal strength is 75%, signal quality is 0%

I've owned this property for 2 years now and never had any issues previously.

Any ideas?

Main TV is a Panny VT50
Upstairs TV is a Sony 32D3000

Any reason why when connected via the sky box (RF2) the digital signal isn't lost if you pull the aerial out of the master socket?"

Hi mate,

did you use the same 25 mtr cable to connect to the tvs?

the thin white extension cables are really poor and the moulded connections come apart inside

Yes mate, it's a spare cable I used to test (is more like 15 meters in all honesty).

I've got a high quality 5m cable that I've since used to plug the main tv directly to the mains socket, this improved the quality but its still not perfect.

The above test pretty much ruled out any potential av component issues which leaves me with a either a faulty mains cable or antenna :(.

Antenna looks to be pointing the right way lol, I'm guessing living in a Manchester City suburb the signal should still be strong even if its been nudged by a few inches!?

From what I can work out with what you're explaining I would guess the there is a problem with the incoming aerial signal to the master socket (eg. damaged cable or bad connection at the aerial balun). It sounds to me that the signal that you are getting maybe just be coming from the cable itself, as if the cable is acting as an aerial so to speak and which is why the upstairs T.V is slightly better as that TV is higher and wont be getting as much noise as the downstairs TV.

what kind of signal area do you live in? Pm me your postcode if you can and I can check what your area's like as I've worked all over Manchester in the past 13 years I've done this job.

Hey mate!

I've pm'd you my postcode :)

Unfortunately I'm not around this weekend (mates birthday :().

If your around any other time though, let me know - you've been an absolute star.

I think you're right, I've just been outside and the antenna looks fine. I can only presume its the cable or the the connection between the cable and antenna.

If the cable needs replacing can the original socket be used?

My cable crosses the roof and is fed down the dividing wall between my property and next doors.

The only reason I ask is because I've just spent a fortune having the entire house decorated lol.

Yeah you should be able to use the same route of the existing cable asking as access isn't too bad.

You should be getting good signal going on your post code but just check that your tv is tuned to the correct channel numbers. I think on Panasonics you go into the Manual tuning menu on a channel that's bad and it should give you a two digit number so make sure it displays one of these channel numbers - 62 59 54 58 61 55. (This is providing you're on the winter hill transmitter which you should be). The reason for this is that when some tvs scan to tune they can pick up reflection signals from repeater transmitters.

Im back and forth from Manchester so ill fire you PM when I'm over next week to see if you're available.
