Anybody got one of these? DivX Player

My Samsung dvd players supports DIVX/XVID (Avi files) and saves so much time.

Edit - In answer to your question Scutch yes it will play Avi's.

Thanks mate. My Sony DVD player sadly doesnt play DivX. At least I dont think so. For £130 you'd expect it too.

What is this "p**n" I hear so much about? Nothing to get excited over I hope? ;)

Yer i got a Samsung DVD Recorder which does. So useful, had to set my laptop up every time before i got it

What is an upscaling DVD player?
The DVD player attempts to connect-the-dots to add scan lines that were not present in the recorded images. The result is often visually pleasing, but will not contain additional detail not previously present. This feature is associated with digital (HDMI) video output and is of particular interest when the DVD is better than the display is at scaling to the display's native resolution.

What is an upconverting DVD player?
(see upscaling DVD player above)
The DVD player attempts to connect-the-dots to add scan lines that were not present in the recorded images. The result is often visually pleasing, but will not contain additional detail not previously present. This feature is associated with analog (component, VGA, SCART) video output and is of interest for either CRT projectors or for digital displays without HDMI when when the DVD is better than the display is at scaling to the display's native resolution.

cool find scutch, i got hundreds of films on my pc that i simply dont have time to convert to dvd but ide love them on disc to watch on the telly.

think ima buy one, good reviews too

so before i buy one, basically i can just burn a movie to a cdr and this will play that movie if its xvic/divx avi etc?

According to my mate who has one, yes. SImply burn it on a DVD or CD and pop it in here and it will play it. Very clever.
I want one, but now oska has got me thinking of spending another few £'s and going for the bigger one from scan.co.uk
Nng. Might just go for this one, in the end. Great price too.

Indeed, but he did get it working come his final comment.

" I think the main thing is to follow the advice about burning the disc as ISO9660, level 2, no multisession. Since doing this I've only had problems with one DivX file, I re-encoded it and now it works fine."

you think hes referring to burning everything? like whenever he burns something to cdr or dvd hes gotta set it as these specific options? as tbh ive never touched anything when burning stuff, just done it automatically

It depends what you are after. The only reason I would buy the more expensive is because I'm super lazy. You wouldn't even need to burn a disk and also have HD quality. The other is a very good and almost a disposable price. It's just the USB, HDMI and upscaling swung it for me.

whats hdmi and upscalling? isit *really* any improvement over anything? i just wanna burn stuff to cd and watch them on the telly downstairs.

Ditto. But I'm a bit of a gadget nut, too :S

My mate does swear by that DivX player though, he's got that exact one.

Check The Hoff's comments on upscaling on the previous page. As for HDMI it is worth it if you have an HD ready TV as it is the connection you need to view stuff in HD. You can then download HD files and view them how they are supposed to look on your HD tv!

It's not exactly expensive Scutch so you might as well give it a try and if you're not happy with it stick it on Ebay and you'll probably make your money back.

Which one James? I clicked on your link but it was the whole shebaz. Is there a link for just the player itself with a price?

Oh right. Thought you meant that little beaut you posted a link to. Was tempted by it. lol :)

If I were after something like this, I think I would buy an X-Box for £50. Mod it with XBMC and it will play just about any media format you throw at it. You can also fit a bigger hard drive to store your files and also connect USB hard drives etc. Plus you can stream across a network from your PC directly. And I think it also plays games ;)

No upscaling to HD though.

True, but if your watching XviD movies compressed onto one CD then that's the last of your worries! Plus typically computer/software based scalers offer equivalent or better quality to their hardware counterparts, so I doubt you'd get much benefit if any in this instance.

great little machine, about the size of a slimline ps2.

played all my new dvd discs, but having problems with a few formats which i aint found out which yet.

ok found it wont play .rmvb files, and some xvid variations it will play sound but no picture.

its played every new film ive burnt, but my old films (in old formats) it only plays sound.

great little thing though

Hmm thats odd. I'd have thought it would play them. My mates plays most things he throws at it from his burned CDs, even old stuff. Not bad for £25 :)
