looking for a new laptop.. ideally as cheap as possible..

considering one of these as it seems to fit my needs.. i dont use the computer for games.. i do have a digital camcorder so need room for quite large video files while capturing and editing

I'm not clued up on laptops so I can't really comment but all I can say is Aaron's been upfront and honest with me in the past and one of my mates had great service when he purchased a laptop from him/solaris.

i think you could get a better laptop for that kinda money, better in performance and build quality, that one looks a bit snide tbh

seems like a good deal to me, not sure on the quality of other laptops really as I'm new to them. But I've just bought a Dell Inspiron 9300, I've used my friends Inspiron 6000 and was very impressed with it and had the urge to get one ever since. Finally got pissed off with sharing the family pc so did.
Heres the Dell notebook range

I went for the 9300 mainly because its bigger and came with double ram(1024mb) free, free printer (now on ebay), I went over to pc world to see what they had, and they stock about 20 or so laptops there and 2 of them had a 17" screen so knew I was gonna be getting something a bit different to most of the notebooks out there, out of the 2 they had they were both toshiba and over 1K, they were also a 1kg heavier and not that special looking (this one is a nice silver colour) I payed £839 and added bluetooth for another £20.

That is a good laptop for the money, laptops with a 1Gb of RAM nowdays are more than that. Not sure about the processor tbh but the speed seems fairly quick really. 80Gb hard drive will be about the highest (you can get slightly more) that you can get.

As far as Acers go there good laptops too, my dad got one a few months back and hasn't had any problems with it.

where was that from? i went onto dell website, picked the inspiron. put down dvd writer 80gb hard drive 1024 ram and it came to 850 (and yer i did take the service/warranty thing thats an extra 150 off)

only really got about 650 to spend cos my parents are buying me it for christmas/early 21st birthday pressie.

i also require either a firewire connection or a PCMCIA slot.
the built in wireless stuff on the acer is appealing too..

By the way all Centrino laptops have wireless built into them. If i was going to buy a laptop it would be a Centrino, however if i was going to buy a desktop i'd probably go for AMD.

hmm dunno how he got that, probably a good deal on at the time. I got it to £863 for that spec, and paid £859 for mine and thats the 9300 with bluetooth, weird. I also had good delivery too, they said it would be shipped on the 7th of dec(today) and take 1-3 working days but it arrived on monday (5th). I've neved owned a laptop before but I'm in love with it already, it's really quick completely silent and good size to use at my desk with the 17" widescreen. The touch pads good because of the extra page scroll features too but I've bought a mouse as its a big screen to move around. I didn't go for the screen upgrade as I knew this one would be good enough as they use samsung lcd's.

hmm

could i save a bob or two this way??

same laptop here but with just 512mb ram at 512 quid incl delivery

http://www.savastore.com/productinf...atalog_name=Savastore&page=mainfeatures&pid=5

then buy 512mb ram from here? (is that the correct ram any techy people?)

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=82242

would come to like £550

i know my current laptop has SO DIMM memory in it, but that savastore website quotes the acer as using DDR SDRAM ?? does this mean its not the usual SO DIMM laptop memory? or is the SD ram available in various fitments?

anyone more technical got a clue as i only know basic stuff

IMO a laptop is not as user friendly to upgrade as a desktop, if your not confident upgrading it then, it's worth spending the extra in the first place, plus you may void the warrenty messing around with the insides, you know what some manufacturers are like these days!

if it had to go off for any warranty work.. surely can just clip the ram back out??

on my current laptop i just remove the keyboard and the ram just clips in??
