Anyone know what's wrong with this paint...

hmmm.... i'm not sure.

Could you have put it on too thick and it has run maybe? Although there doesn't look to be much on there to begin with... :S

I'm sure someone will be along soon and will know what is going on.

Some interesting stuff re orange peel on this site an Audio visual site no less.....help is help though.


5)Paint in an environment as close to 25 degrees celcius as possible, the hotter it is the quicker the paint will dry and have less time to flow out properly, also avoid too much humidity if possible.

Was doing it outside, no garage or heated building big enough...hmmmm Mate is yet to return my call.

Is that out of an aerosol?

Did you sand/scotch the area prior to painting?

Did you use panel wipe first to get rid of any silicone on the panel?

It's been rubbed down, degreased, sprayed with upol acid 8 etch primer and left a week.

I am not a painter or claiming to know ANYTHING about painting but i've painted a fair bit of stuff with aerosol over the years.

That to me looks like moisture has got into the paint. Either by it being on the panel before you started or by forming in condensation while you were in the car and painting it.

Hard to tell from the pic but I'd say you need to put more paint on in one coat so it flows better.

I'm a paint engineer but I only paint cars at 21 degrees and 65% humidity and with 8 robots!

It could be contamination in the paint or on the surface.

Could be this, as the paint was inside house, car outside in barn, car towed to house, paint got from house and then sprayed. Warm to cold not a good combination.

wet/dry sanding to sort out orange-peel, had this happen to the spoiler on my mr2 aftr a bodyshop bodged it, still after sanding/then hitting it with some g3 cutting compound and then a good polish it turned out pretty well.

By g3 i mean the 'Farecla Cutting compound' can be picked up from here: http://www.bodyshop-tools-supplies.co.uk/product_view.php?id=33

As previously noted this can occur when drying conditions aren't good - ie temp/ moisture. It will happen again if you lacquer it in same conditions as the lacquer will shrink when drying, so you may need to wet/dry/cutting/polishing again if the same happens with lacquer.

Im no profesonal in this field, but worked for me after much scouring of google, hope this helps :)
 
I just posted in your project. I recently had a similar thing when my rattle cans got cold. They sprayed fine at room temp but it looked like that after the can had been sat in the cold (10C) garage for a few hours.

A tin of thinners, a few rags, wash it all off and start again. In the warmer weather.
