Apple Time Capsule how do they work?

Anyone got one? Was thinking about getting one when I get my Imac in January but wasn't sure how it worked. Are you meant to keep them on 24/7? Sounds like a bit of a waste of energy?! Surely just firing the thing up once a week to do it's business would be alot better. Can it work this way?! Cheers!

It's a wireless access point / router with a built in hard disk. the hard disk powers down when its not in use but if you need it for routing then its not really a waste of energy.
