Looks like my 1st generation Apple TV's hard drive has died.

Before I take it apart and pop a new hard drive in is there any other "upgrades" I should look at doing?

any idea where I can get the software from and how to install it too?
​all I can find is cloning the old drive, but mine is no more.

You'll have to find an "image" of the AppleTV hard drive via google and then restore this image onto the drive before putting it back in the ATV.
