Are 172's not so good?

  Bumblebee
Negative - power per pound they are pretty much unbeatable. No major faults or niggles as long as them have well maintained.

Go for it. i have had two and would buy another again (a trophy if i were to.)

  missmy257bhp r5/ got evo6
i think the 172 cup is the best of all the 2.0 clio

ps i mean mk2s as the williams is also the nuts

  Cup'd Monaco 172
172 is great car, just needed the japanese to build it.

The french normally build the most fun and great handling hot hatches. Or have done. clio, 205, 306, etc etc Its just a shame they arent screwed together like a Honda.

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
see id rather have a ph1 over a cup, not much in realisty speed wise but you get leather and all the little toys that make it a more pleasent day to say drive

  Clio MK 4
I got a corsa and was thinking of putting a 2.0l turbo LET into into it as they are rapid as f**k but the rest of the car will probably start breaking

  Audi TT 225
RS box'es are made of cheese and paper, you can turbo em if you got 6k ish to spend, just gonna chew clutches and boxes if your not careful with it. But you'll have 300+ ponies LOL

  LY 200
Iv owned a 2.0 mk1 and 2.0 mk2 and both have been sound cars that served me well!!!

Theres better similar cars out there (most at more cost) but theres more that are worse i can assure you.

  Classic Mini Cooper
are they quicker than civic type r?
They are close, but the Type R has 200bhp, well 197 if you wanna niggle, but they rev to 9000rpm, so tend to pull a lot better, imo i think that the engine note on a 172 / 182 sounds better than the Honda, and anyway, Honda's are for rich tea eating tea drinking smell of wee old people aren't they!!:)

  Classic Mini Cooper
dRUM how well does the CTR do against your 240 bhp Subaru Wagon out of interest?
Ive no idea mate, never been up against one, I would reckon it would be close cos the scooby's are quite heavy, but the scooby has good torque and the 4wd, I don't tend to race people much, but if there is some nob sitting up my pipe i'll bury me boot to see what he / she has got! I generally know what the scooby can beat, and don't tend to try against motors that I know will whip my arse. Unlike the little boy who tried to race me in his saxo!:)

  Black-Gold 182
I thought 182s were better in the sense of stiffer suspension, better wheels etc etc. If you look at the article I've posted 182s look brilliant.

I haven't got a Clio yet, I'm spending alot of money on one (money which I haven't got) so I might as well buy the best one.

Which is a 182??? maybe, maybe not. I'm not an expert......

Hey it's a good topic for us newbies, especially those of us that haven't bought a Clio yet.

Please be patient :)

I woudnt go for a 182, for £5300 i bought 172 cup, with 32k on the clock, in mint condition, not a scratch anywere

if you want things like aircon, then buy a ph1 172 and spend 800 getting cambelt done and loads of other bits and pieces, but you can pick up a ph1 for about 4k now in good condition

182's are overated, unless your getting a trophy which costs alot more money your better off sticking to a 172, there are no benefits compared to a 172 cup apart from leather and climate control

handling is much better on a cup, plus they are nearly 100kg lighter!

But doesn't a 182 cup look better than a 172 cup?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;)

Ok, I'll get drawn into the debate then......

Personally I'm not a big fan of the 182 style alloys. Although they are better than the 172 five-spokes which are truly gash IMHO.

I doubt a 172 Cup handles massively better than a 182 with cup pack suspension either. The springs are actually stiffer on the 182.

You should base your decision more on what spec you want, what you are going to use the car for, and how much you want to spend.

  Audi TT 225
all the interiors on every mk2 are gash and deserve to be ripped out and replaced by cages, buckets and harnesses :D

  Audi TT 225
Ive been driving a clio 3 for just over an month and the interior still rattles, the speaker covers rattle like wh*res too. So at least renault kept something the same eah? :D

  Ph1
I personally wouldnt own a 182 because the ones iv come up against seem gutless. Could be due to them not being bedded in etc

Very impressed with the Cups. They have a very aggressive stance and are rapid in standard trim.

Best looker for me is the phase 1 172's as they stand out as being a hot hatch a lot more than the phase 2's do plus i own one haha
