Are all 9V DC power cables the same?

  Ph1 172
I have a set of speakers that plug into my pc using a jack, so they require a power source as well, but Ive had them years and have lost the power cable. All it says at the power input is dc 9V +-
Are cables for this type of thing universal or do I need to find out an amp figure as well?

universal replacement adapters will be rated to a maximum current (milliamps) they can supply - usually like 300mA, 500mA, 1000mA.

the other thing is polarity... with the round DC plugs, some use the centre as + others use the outside as +, there should be a little diagram near the socket (this diagram should match the one on any adapter you try to use or if its a universal adapter then make sure the plug is the right way round) but as the speakers were probably only ever designed to be powered from the PCs PSU then they may have omitted this.

tbh, unless youve got a spare adapter hanging around or the speakers are pretty decent you may be better off looking to buy some new ones, we used to sell universal adapters in the shop i use to work in and they were £6.99+ and new basic PC speakers started at £6.99 also!

If the polarity, plug size, voltage and the ampage is at least the minimum the speakers require.. then you can use it.

Otherwise buy a new set of speakers.
