Are Mac programs different to PC programs?

I have a list of programs a friend would like me to 'acquire' for his graphics degree course. Programs like PS, Illustrator etc. Can I 'acquire' the normal version or does it need to be Mac specific?

If there for use on a MAC they need to be MAC programs as the operating systems are completely different. MAC OS is UNIX based.
