generally its a car thats been modified to something else, perhaps upgraded. an example of a hybrid is a clio 1.8 16v having a williams engine conversion becoming a 2.0 hybrid.

Just to clarify a little more. A hybrid is a mixture of more than one thing. It doesn't necessarily relate to modifications.

In the above example, FMAVA is correct in saying a Clio16v with a Willy engine is a hybrid car ie a Clio16v 2.0.

Other hybrid cars are things like Toyota Prius - which uses a petrol engine combined with a electric motor to increase mpg.
