my mate had a 53 plate (2004) Astra GSI, 197 bhp. Felt quick and was i drove it a few times. Boring to drive though and heavy. We did a track day at Bedford back in June this year and i was all over him, had to slow down to let him catch me up lol !!
straight line though keeps up but mid range and top end it would have the edge due to extra power
Ive come from a GSi to a Ph2 172 and would have to personally say the GSi is definatly quicker in a straight line, the low down kick of the turbo gives it the edge and keeps pulling!
Handling wise it isnt as good as the clio but what you would make up on the bends you would lose in the straights so personally i would say evens really or down to driver!
THe astra is a totally different car though, its abit of a cruiser, its duller to drive, turbo really makes it being really dull, but its a high spec car and well built and a good looking car IMO!
From wells, i know neil through work well when he used to work for tesco, im waiting to come to a meet, but want a decent 172 first, and hopefully give me a couple of weeks and i will have one
I test drove one of these when I was looking for a new car before I bought the clio, as I used to be a vauxhall nut. I was seriously disappointed when as soon as I put my foot down it began to misfire and the engine management light came on! The car was up for £9k aswell, the dealer was just too tight to fix it until the car was sold!
I personally think the clio is a much better all round buy to be honest, get so much more for your money!
