ATI vs Nvidia

Hmmm but what about the 7950GX. Still only uses a Single slot

The GX2 is a monster, and doesn't give a s**t how much res or AA/AF you throw at it. I own one as you know, but it's considerably more cash than the X1950.

Not sure why that article is comparing a flagship ATI with a non-flagship Nvidia though, which I think was your point.

Personally iv got 2 7900gtx's in sli mode and they do the job quite nicely.. must admin.. i wish i had got a gx2... but it came out the week after i got my first gtx.
Still performs sh*t hot tho

^^don't fret, I'd expect SLI 7900GTXs to perform slightly better than a single GX2, although there isn't much in it.

Still considering adding a 2nd GX2 for Quad SLI sex, expecially as the drivers are evolving. But Vista and DX10 (and all that implies) are fairly close. It's all about the Crysis...

Obviousley know that nvidia are a far better brand and better build quality, nvidia are by far superior as someone that has owned loads of cards (graphic) and online gaming for over 10yrs in lan parties and tournements

quad sli involves a minimum of 900watt psu.. possibly time for an upgrade, lol

what sort of moniter u using? no point in it unless u have a decent one

and i agree with this.. ati drivers tend to be pants.. the nvidi ones have there moments though

700w OCZ GameXtream, no probs for quad SLI. 900w my ass.

Montior is a Dell 2007WFP 20.1" widescreen LCD 1680x1050

lol.. well u might need more than 700w if u r running a fair wack of hard drives aswell :p

im toying with the idea of a widescreen lcd for this.. make the gtx's work.. not really looked into the dell one tho..

Fair play mate but it's a games monster. One HD. One optical. I use this laptop for everything other than games. TheBeast2 will easily handle another GX2 although I doubt it's a reasonable upgrage path given that DX10 is around the corner.

The Dell units are well regarded. Samsung panels, brilliant backlights, and letterboxing if you need to reduce res for games, so no scaling and non-native blurring. Obviously it cannnot beat a CRT for smoothness, but certainly no ghosting compared to any other LCD I have used/seen. I'm a games monster and I chose the Dell for sheer scale, contrast, brightness and smoothness - despite the seemingly poor update 'figures'

Bit of an unfair test really one card has been around for months the other only a couple weeks. Of course the newest ATI is gonna be faster. Either way it doesnt matter which you buy they will both play any game you want them to. Next upgrde will be the cheapest of the 2 DX10 high end cards out.

I was considerig getting another 7800gtx 512 but I just cant be bothered forking out another £200+ for a graphics card. Only for me to have to upgrade when DX10 comes along and the next cards are likely to be nearly twice as quick anyway.

That comparison is poor, The best detailed review comparison between the two flagship single cards is here, with everything cranked up
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/quality_vs_quantity.html

You've only got to do a quick search over at overclockers to see there always the ATI v Nvidia fanboys in the same vain as the AMD v Intel fanboys too, so regardless of any reviews or facts, theres those who simply will dis the opposition

In nearly every test, in particular in OpenGL, The GX2 is ahead but not enough to warrant the extra money imho, The X1950XTX can be had for £287 inc vat from overclockers at the moment, the Nvidia cards do have a much much lower power consumption and heat though

The above test and the majority I've seen also have ATI winning the image quality debate, especially with high AA/AF settings, this is the case in nearly every review

I can't comment on SLI v Crossfire as I'm not clued up on it though

As for sub £200 cards, ATI wins hands down, The X1900XT 256Mb can be had for a ridiculous £165 inc vat, easily clocks to X1900XTX core & memory but is almost £80 cheaper (albeit the X1900XTX has 512Mb) In the vast majority of games and when not using say 1600x1200 res, theres not really much "noticeable" difference between this and the flagship X1950XTX, especially if you aren't running 16AF and all textures fully maxed out

Nvidia will however have the worlds first DX10 card with SM4

Love my card when i got mine it was the fastest thing out. Paid for it too £475 it was. Got a 7800GTX 512. Amazing card still only slightly slower than the 7900GTX and outperforms the 7900GT. However im not a fanboy i just buy whats fastest at the time. hence the card before this was an ATI and my CPU in my other system was an Intel i have an AMD X2 in this. It doesnt matter to me who makes what Just when im buying it if im forking out the cash for high end equipment i want the best simple as really. My system cost me an absolute bomb back then as well.

I spent over £900 on 3 parts. And then a week later another £400+ on 2 parts. But even now after nearly a year of having it still nothing it cant run at max details at 1600x1200 so was worth the cash its barely even being pushed. Wont need to upgrade for a while i dont think. Unless DX10 cards get popular quick then i will be upgrading.

Im still using a 6800 Ultra, that drives one 19" and a 20" widescreen tft's with no problems, i can play quake 4, why upgrade? it'd mean a new motherboard, new ram...... f**k that.

^ Know what you mean, Im still running an X800XT-PE on AGP, mobile Athlon socket A at 2.4Ghz, and DDR400, am not doing anything until Vista & DX10 established and see how gaming goes next year with the likes of Crysis and any Unreal 3 engined games
Am running FSB 212, processor at 2.45Hhz, I can run anything at 1280x960 maxed out, can even run FEAR at this res at pretty high settings, runs well too

The 6800Ultra is a pretty beefy card. I had one up until recently. It really needs a 3rd party HSF though, as the OEM fitment sounds like Concorde taking off. A 6800 based AGP machine will play all games quite well, but compared to the cream of the PCIE crop around now, it's seriously pwned hardcore.

I can see your logic in not upgrading though, an upgrade path should always be about the games, and if you can play the games you like, at the settings you like, with a framerate you are happy with, then upgrading is pointless.

I've got a seriously itchy trigger finger...

I can pop another GX2 into my cart now, and be quad barreled by Monday. I WANT Quad SLi, even though I know it's maybe not a smart move with DX10 around the corner :D

However, I reckon it's going to be a year from now until Vista and DX10 are fully stable with drivers and hardware, and DX10 games worth playing. Crysis? hmmmmm

They will also be out before year end might be worth just waiting i mean you will get a very capable new card that is probably gonna be quicker than you GX2 anyway.
