AUX belt change, tool required?

  340i
A few weeks ago i brought Cam belt kit, Cam timing tool and Aux belt kit

Took it to a friends garage this weekend, he fitted the cambelt kit fine but then said...

Sorry mate i couldnt do the Aux belt looks like you need some kind of special tool? :dead:

I thought the only "special" tool required was for the cambelt timing?

So is he telling porky pies or not?

how could he do the cambelt without removing and refitting the aux belt???

I am not sure to be honest...

I left the car with him for one afternoon til the next mornin, i came to collect and he just said i couldnt do the AUX belt you need a special tool, which i havent got?

But if i get the tool he said he will fit the AUX belt kit

erm its basically a flat bar (3mm thick) 2inches wide and about 2-3ft long with a 3/8's square drive bit on the end about 3/4's of an inch long

well there's zero chance he's changed the cambelt then IMO

Doesnt sound too technical...
Dont suppose youve got a photo of the tool? and or some exact measurements, i mite get one made at work LOL! ;)

3/8's drive (rachet size) ie the sqaure bit you attach your sockets to, thats the size of the hole on the tensioner

you HAVE to remove the aux belt to do the cambelt, its IMPOSSIBLE otherwise

f**king hell....

I am sure he' s done it though, the core plugs on the side of the engine have been taken out and all the engine mount assembly has been removed..

I shall be giving him a ring first thing in the morning, getting the tool made at work and personally watching him change the AUX belt!

Also Fred do you reccommend changing the water pump at the same time?

Thanks for all you info :hail: :hail:

yeah water pump is worth changing

i just don't understand, he 100% HAS to remove the aux belt to change the cambelt, so why not put the new one on (somehow, i have no idea how he would've done it)

I am in the same position as you... i can get my head around how he did it aswell?

TBH i am thinking he didnt give himself enough time to complete the job as he had to leave at 12:30 on sat morning when i came to collect the car?

Its really pissed me off because he is normally a top bloke, he said he had never done a clio 172 before, but had a look over it first and agreed to the job and has good garage facilties!

you can buy aux tension tools for about a tenner, ive just been looking at them, shame i cant wait for delivery, have to make one, will a flat bar 5mmx500mmx20mm with a 3/8 square piece of steel welded on do? Or even cut up an old 3/8s ratchet and weld that on? How far out does it need to stick 10/15mm?

I use a 3/8 breaker bar, with about a 10MM extension on, you have to take the engine mount of to do it! I did one yesterday!

fred is correct, i fabricated one up as I wasn't going to pay £30 for the bar and you don't get the socket either.

can be done without the tool! more fluffing

^^ or you cn remove the spring, and fit the belt, and then clamp the spring down in vice or something with a jubilee clip around it then loosen it off.

Thats a lst resort mind, i.e you dont have any other tools and now dont hve a car as the aux belt is off lol...

You can undo the top alt support bolt and lean the alt back.

But i normally use a 1/4" ratchet with a 3/8" adaptor on it and an extension tube on the ratchet handle. Plenty of space.

Both good points!! I bet theres some sodding compression on that spring!!!

I bought the smallest 3/8 extension I could buy - Workshop people will know the Snap-On one I mean, dead short. Hit it with the bench grinder, Took 2/3mm off it fits a treat.

Yeah Dan if you buy a tensioner spring you should get a small metal plate in it with a cut out in each end, put it in the vice, put the tool in, and it holds it, when its fitted flick the piece off with a screwdriver and its done. Not on the cups IIRC or Ph1 whatever.
