My aux belt snapped after 1000 miles its was a genuine renualt kit
It wrapped round crank I took it off and the car starts and runs
Would the car run if there was major damage ?

Yeah everything was fine I suspect it's my lack of skill or the fact the kit was 40 quid off eBay I'm trying to find out if I have engine damage anyway to tell ?

  Listerine & Poledo
I had that happen on my 172. It wasn't so much the belt, more how the aux mounting bracket sheared.

You'll likely be ok

It happened less than a quarter mile from my house so I left it to cool for 2 hours then drove it home seemed fine no loss of power, it needed 2 steering arms for mot so will get them to fit new belt at same time.

Unsure about non F4R engines, but if it drives the water pump (which it does on the F4R) you could potentially cause it to overheat?

Dependant on how far its been driven of course!

It'll be fine, just get someone to fit the next one would be my suggestion

I was driving along about 25mph and I heard a screetch and the car died instantly, I knew straight away it was the belt. I jacked it up and cut the belt and unwrapped it from crank pulley it was a fight getting it untangled I just assumed it had taken the cam belt with it I was about to call rac to tow it When my nephew told me to try it as I would need to replace engine anyway and it started and sounds normal, 16 ouch did you replace engine or fix it ?

The last one was genuine but by the looks of the packet was very old, I got another genuine one from local parts store was 98 :(

Was just going to buy a belt as the tensioner and bottom pulley are brand new but couldn't find one

I asked a question once, if you buy belts, they have a 5 years life, what happens if its been on the selves for years.. Renault fella said they come in an air sealed packet..just bought all my belts today..

you have been lucky, if you have just got away with a belt. do you think its better to replace the crank pulley or bolt?or wouldn't they be effected?

I was in a rush for it that's why I paid over the odds and then found out my tie rods where not gonna arrive till tomorrow :(

I would have a look at the crank pulley make sure its not lose or worn looking I don't think it's replaced when doing the timing so it should be ok, prob best to give it a wiggle with the belt off to be 100% sure

:( its a huge design flaw with them imo there should be guard or something to stop it happening and that tensioner design is awful I'll be having both belts done again in 30k along with clutch will be cheaper in the long run

  Clio 172, Escort RST
I think the guard is like that due to the pulley sitting so far inside the engine bay. Not many small cars have a massive engine put into them with not much room to spare.

It could be worse. You could not run one at all. My Escort doesn't (I can't due to the engine type (it's now a ZVH for those wondering)) and Lotus cars came with a very rudimentory cambelt cover.

It's just a shame because the engines seem bulletproof apart from the belts, suppose if its the only thing to worry about not so bad, I suspect the cars would be worth a lot more if there was no issues with belts.
I had a zvh in my fiesta turbo was made from a xr2i engine fst engine and a Mondeo engine iirc
