Backfireing in Engine Bay ?

this mornin was up early and since the car aint moving alot due to wheel problems, i started the car to let the engine turn over for a bit, but whilst doing this the revs droped and started to miss so i taped the acceleration pedal and nothing but the pedal did react later, :S so i carried on lettin it to run and there was 3 bangs from the engine bay, like it was coming from the Exhaust Manifold ? so i switched it off instantly and tried contacting the mechanic, but no answer

Any Idea's ?

cant be coil plugs as they were changed less than a year ago, Spark plugs in November service, so im abit puzzled..

Have you done any work on the car recently?

To be honest the coils are crap so you never know but I would be looking at the leads first, maybe ones arching out. Try taping them up with some eleccy tape and try again.

I would start it up and hold the revs up to a couple of thousand rpm if it's struggling. Sometimes they just need to 'clear' after they've been standing.

The Bangs could just have been unburnt fuel igniting if it's come out of the cylinders and into contact with hot exhaust gases from the other cylinders. (Maybe...)

manifold split or burst at a joint and thast probably why its banging, my 1.2 16v used to do that when the flexi burst.

Yes i have had some work done to the car, but none near the Engine, only Exterior & Interior,

As you say un burnt fuel i did start it earlier and it started to miss but no banging and i kept acceleration on, tried moving off and now if got another spacer problem

Are The Leads expensive? iv spent so much on the car last 2-3months its unberlieveable & now this happen

Leads shouldn't be too bad - perhaps £30 tops?

For a 172 the leads are around £90. they run like pop if they havent been run for a while or just moved about.

Can get a coil pack + leads for around £49 online.

leads come complete with the coil pack on 1.2s and are quite expensive..

if you want to save yourself some money.. dont take two much notice of guesses over the internet and get it diagnosed.

otherwise you could end up buying loads of bits you dont need
