Bad burning smell coming from engine bay, + car won't start.

Started up the 172 this morning, for the first time in a week it fired up first time without any problems.

After 5 or so mins I noticed a strange fishy, plastic burning smell so took it out for a quick spin, and noticed the engine felt very, very hot! The coolant bottle was bubbling away, but the fan hadn't kicked in :S

I've since had the air-con on and the fan works then..

I left in a couple of hours and went to move it, the electrics seemed lazy, it took forever for the windows to go up and down, then all the STOP, SERV etc lights flashed up, I switched off the ignition, went to start it again nothing. :(

Battery is about just over a year old, any ideas peeps?

Cheers Fletch.

erm, well, sounds like the alternator is f**ked! But the coolant is worrying? the aux belt is definately on??? as it drives the water pump aswell! So it could be rubber burning? alt and water pump not working?!

Give you a grand for it?!

The aux belt is on, and the smell seems to be coming from that side. Last time I drove it the aux was squeaking like a b**ch, so it may well be fubar'd

1k "standard", you've got a deal ;)

Doesnt sound too good...

No mate not good. it's the first time in 5 years- 80k that it's properly let me down :(

How handy are you on the spanners?!?! Get the aux belt off! I reckon you will find the problem yourself pretty easy!

Just trying to think when it was last changed mate, I think it was a few years back, so it might well be that.

The Clio knows you have replaced it for s fresher younger model and are retiring it for dirty track work... She's throwing her toys out of the pram now.

Good point fella. I should have more confidence in myself doing simple jobs on the car TBH.

I'll keep you posted mate. Thanks for your help.

Water pump makes sense probably explains the fluid on your drive.

If you need a hand with anything let me know and I'll come round to help.

if theres coolant on your drive the seals probably gone, does it squeal when you turn it over at first? Mine went all over the aux belt and made a terrible racket
