bad day/gearbox gone bang at mallory

D

David_Brown

bad day at the office today to say the least.

Still getting used to the car as its a different animal compared to our last track clio. anyway we got nearly the full morning out of the car at mallory park today, there were a few clio racers there not sure if you are members on here?

car had been making a few strange clunky noises and 3rd gear had started to crunch, i was waiting in the pitlane waiting to get onto the circuit, green light came on, i pulled away and it juddered and just lost drive.

obviously we need to open it up to see exactly whats happened but were guessing its gearbox. im not sure what gearbox was in it but i think it was just a standard one so im after advice on where to go from here. do we get an uprated/strengthened box in or so we go the whole hog and go sequential?

hopefully you can give me advice or ideas on costs etc?

car is laxys old car with 200odd HP engine for people who dont know.

thanks in advance

To be honest, the boxes are known to be weak, but last well if you heel and toe, I think your problem is its not been having that previous to you owning it.

If you have the money to spend then a stronger box will be a good plan, but it will be big ££ and for how fairly easy the box is to change, id fit another standard box, but get a refurb

thanks for that mate, as you can imagine im a bit pee'd off at the mo so that sounds good.

sequential is out of the question as iv looked at costs etc and its just too much.

The car should have around 230bhp when we get it mapped and as for the engine bay its just basically an engine and thats it, theres nothing else in there so access is no problem.

will a standard/rebuilt gearbox handle that power do you think?

If its purely a track Clio and it gets used regularly and hard, expect to rebuilt a box roughly once a year.

I can imagine its not something your too happy about, but at least it didnt happen at 100mph on track! lol

exactly!haha

its just 1 of those things i know.iv spoke to laxy and its just a standard 172 box so if we are able to get a replacement il be happy.

is it likely to have taken the clutch out with it do you think?

Car maybe gets 5-6 trackdays per year so its not constant abuse it will get.

any idea on best places to look for replacement box?

This guy will do a good job for you if you take to him,he does ours and has done a lot of people's from here and all are pleased. Can do a complete rebuild with everything for about £400,all parts on the shelf as well so only a days work.

He also knows about the mod for the circlip to stop driveshaft pulling out.

We race with a standard box @200bhp no problem so far this year.

If you do ring him mention Burpspeed for a good price.

thanks tony i appreciate that, is that number correct as it seems to be 1 number short? i will be ringing him for definate

  172 Race Car
Number is correct yes. Weird I know.

As Tony said, Agency do our box (standard box)

Its done 3 race meetings, 2 test days, a trackday and lts of hours on the rolling road and its still perfect.

The guy does a modification to the diff circlip to prevent it failing (a common problem) and has never had one come back.

A standard rebuild is about £275+vat but can go upto £400 if its very trashed

Again, dont forget to mention us and he will look after you

great that mate the sooner we get the box out the better. is that telephone number correct?

  172 Race Car
Yes number is correct. Longest Ive known him take to do a box for a member on here was 2-3 days. 99% of the time he does them within 24hours

will they rebuild it with all the standard internals or can i spec a strenghtened one? saying that if your running 200bhp and your ok will i really need it.

  172 Race Car
Standard internals. Not sure if he can do uprated, best ask.

We wont be getting ours uprated at all. Its gonna go to him every winter for a rebuild anyway
