been out in a 172. scary

  clio sport mk1 golf

went in a 172 yesterday. scared me, not the power but he front end handling seemed really loose, i darent go round the croners very fast!! stright line speed was cool, but i was really unsure on the front end being so so light and loose. is this common or is it just me.

i still want one tho, a pink mk2 would be lovely. can you get pink ones?????

mine feels fine at the front, its the rear thats twitchy.

what u want a pink one for......just get a red one, next best thing ;)

what do you mean loose, nosh?

You cannot, imho, slam the C172 into corners; theres a heavy engine up front. It need to be poured into corners gently....then hammered out. Then it should flow through corners with aplomb. Mine does now Ive sussed it.

sorry, I mean you can enter corners fast, but smoothly, then hammer out. Be ragged/rough with steering inputs and throttle and they become an amusingly playful. Be smooth and precise and gentle but firm, and they fly through corners. If that makes any sense.

Agree with Scudetto. You need to pick your line in the 172 and stick to it, but give it some stick on the way out of the corner.

LOL. I wish it was like this every time! The alternative strategy:

Head for corner way too fast. Turn wheel. Car doesnt change direction. Scenery approaching fast. Dab brakes and wait 0.5 seconds while back-end whizzes round. When car is pointing in desired direction, floor throttle.

This method is (1) slow, (2) destroys your tyres but (3) a laugh as it often goes horribly wrong. Trackdays only BTW.

  Mk2 172

You gotta grow into the 172 steering and power.

My 172 seemed scary after my 95 1.4RT. But now it is a lot easier to b**ch slap around corners.

If my feista is anthing to go by by a red one and leave it outside for a few years and itll go pink all by itself.

find it very light up front if that makes sense, i got no confidence in it when going fast into corners. feel very wallowy and grip aint fantastci compared to my valver

back end steps out suprisingly easy and at very low speed, does not take much to unsettle a 172

need a few suspension tweaks definately.

i would hate to drive this fast everyday factory std

thanx guys, it just felt so so light it was untrue, and i didnt have much confidence when going round corners, even at normal speed. Ive taken it out again, and ive donw what you guys said, the salesman told me to wrag it, so i did, i think if i get one ill get used to it eventually. Still want a pink one, reckon renault would do that as a non standard option, reckon itd be cool and would turn alot of heads 2!!!;)

was it a mk1 or mk2?

The mk1s can be twitchy but more at the rear.

Youve gotta take into account that the car can understeer like a b**ch but once youre used to it, you take that into account.

If you do get the understeer, then lift off, and the tail will come out...pointing the front in the right direction and then back on the power to get going again

was a mk2 south african buddy. must amit i think id need to get used to it first, but it just proper scared me big time!!! but i usually drive really slow so i imagine itd handle fine!! i never go more than 65mph.:)

  Elise/VX220/R26

I find my mk2 to be totally fine. It understeers quite easily but then you do have a massive engine right at the front of the car. Dont know if you guys have tweeked suspension setups that are causing the back to be twitchy but I find it a very stable and predictable car. The back end wont come out unless Im really pushing it...in the wet.

Only car Ive been in that had comparable handling was me old nova SR (Iknow I know I was 18 OK!) That wa superb, slammed and goodyear eagle F1s all round. Clios like that but a lot more sure footed, not a hint of twitchyness about it at all.

The car is standard, apart from the 16" wheels on, but the overall diameter is the same, so that shouldnt affect geometry.

Ive found youve really gotta let off the power to get the rear out, but overall the car is stable

How are you lot driving ffs.

My car is very stable, back end never steps out, front tucs in ok as well.

The only thing i dont like is abs cuts in to easy.

And i drive very fast foot to floor every where and keep at 100mph on b roads no problem, may be you lot need some driver training.
