Belt slipping noise?+ More :(

  Jap Box
When going from 1st to 2nd I get some kind of slipping noise from a belt, no idea what one but its getting worst now. People always look at me asif im wheel spinning everywhere but really its a belt squeeling like a b**ch, sometimes does it from 2nd to 3rd too, when higher up in the revvs.

Also now got some kind of steam coming from the car at random times too :S no idea what it is as when opening the bonnet you cant see it anywhere, could it possibly be condensation heatingup and evaporating possibly?

only belt that can slip is the aux belt, open the bonnet and wiggle it up and down, shouldnt be any more than a quarter or so inch play in it, if theres more it needs tightened.

other than that could be a bearing in one of the idlers or other spining componenent, easy start is to check the belt tension mate

Thanks for that, ill take a look at it later today now when im doing some other stuff :)

Sounds more like the clutch slipping to me.

If it was the clutch would it cause the car to take a lot longer to move while its slipping? As im pretty sure thats what it does most of the time, and judders slightly other times too.

Ball park figure if it is the clutch? :(

start the car put it in third and try to pull off like you would in first if it stalls instantly clutch is ok.if it pulls off but you aint going nowhere but does not stall most likely your clutch.

could be a load of crap but thats how i checked my old car lol:eek:

Lmao ill give that a go now, so basically if in 3rd the clutch slips and revvs instead of stalling then its buggered. If it just stalls its not that bad?

I'm quite sure it's clutch by what you've said but obviously without seeing it I've got no way of telling.

If you go out, put it in first, and try pull of hard, if you hear a lot of revving, but don't go far and smell a burning smell, then it's 90% the clutch.

Ok I also tried that and it does indeed just burn and do nothing, how much roughly will it cost as im getting it all fixed up next week :)

Also tried pulling off in 3rd and it pulled off fine and moved fine, just abit juddery after about 2 meters movement :p

definatly the clutch then. as for price i don't know? always done my own so it only costs me the price of the clutch;) ring round for some prices, imo i would say between £250 and £350 as its not as much labour intensive on a 1.2??

Shouldn't be more than 250. Stop driving it now though, or at least stop making it slip, drive VERY gently. As you'll ruin the flywheel too if you're not careful (I did on my 1.2)

In my experience with clutches, big chains, such as Mr. Clutch, are actually often the cheapest.

Ahh great :rasp: another hefty cost for me then lol

Ohh right, I didnt know if actually damaged anything, thought it was just slipping so id lose some acceeration. Garage I know will do it for the price of the part + only 1 hour labour as im booked in for a service anyway and have been there for various other bits :)
