Just been chatting to (having my car slated by) a guy called Chris H on Migweb. He's well into his old skool Renaults from what I gather. He mentioned the above mod. I can't find any info on the search facility. Is Ben still doing this? How much is it and does anyone have any before after info/pics?

Chris H is a legend, from RSC/ Retro Renault, he knows just about anything about proper renaults.

Presume its a mod on the mk1 clios, did he go inot any details?

i certainly am and do.

What car?

If its a F7P/R series engine then the inlet manifold doesnt require any work of any sort.

So erm....what does this inlet mod do, and is it certain modal specific, or can it be done to any MPi Mk1 Clio

It's an F4R 172 Mk2 motor.
Chris' quote from Mig:
'ben gets the inlet chops is open re-shapes it, the stock renault core shift is appaling on them, the older F7 engines as found in the old 16V's are much better.

Anyway chopped open, re-shaped welded back up, normally gets around 10 or so horses. PM Ben on CS, he was doing a group deal on it a wee while ago.'

What sort of price are you charging Ben? Is 10bhp feasible? Do you have any more info/pics eg. timescales etc?

Most manifolds can benefit from some level of modification, however, some liek the valver and williams dont because they are overly large already and you cant get any tools in them.

The 172/182 manifold responds well because its not a great shape and the casting quality is poor. There are 2 levels to the 172 manifold mod, one is working the areas you can (which is about 90%), reshaping, matching and generally optimising the flow path. The second level reuqires cutting off the plenham top, welding it up (to give me more meat to work with) and starting from scratch, its substantially more expensive, but substantially better.

How much is substantially more expensive?
Is 10bhp a realistic gain?

I had my 172 mk2 Inlet modified by Nick Hill at Hillpower. Having this done made the car far more responsive and driveable through the rev range. To underline BenR's comments regarding poor casting, my inlet manifold was significantly different in terms of bore where it mated to the engine. IMHO a worthwhile modification.

What did it cost you Matt? Do you have any power figure increases? Is it a visible mod or hidden? Just thinking about insurance.

It cost £250. Hillpower takes you existing inlet manifold and swap it for one which has been "worked" on. I don't have any power figures as my aim was driveability rather than out and out power. The manifold looks exactly the same as the standard one the only way you could tell it been modded is to take it off and look inside. But then again I ve been told some (rare) std inlet manifold are a very good match and don't require any or much work.

That isn't a bad price for the supposed increase though Matt. I am sure Ben will confirm figures when he is back online. You have got me thinking now.

When we all experience a 172/182 that is substantially faster than others in stock form, and call it a 'good one', the primary reason is the inlet manifold match and usually how its been run in. Sometimes you just get lucky.

The cost of manifold reworking is £120 (in the group buy, £180 normally) for the work, plus fitting labour if you require fitting.

The extensive manifold work is £320 (in the group buy, £400 normally) and takes substantially longer to do the work, there is hours and hours and hours of welding and grinding involved.

In the mild rework its a good idea to get the fueling altered, and in the extreem mod its essential. Gains are typically between 6-15bhp, averaging 8-10bhp for the cheaper modification. However, if your manifold is a good one to start with, gains will be in the lower end of the scale, i cannot gaurantee gains due to the nature of the work.

Even 6bhp isn't a bad figure for the price. What is the score with the group buy? I don't suppose you offer a remap service as well Ben?

Is this done on an exchange basis or is it drop the car off and pick it up later if so how long would it take, where r you based give me something the routeplanner will understand. Thanks

Ben, any ideas about the F3P inlet manifold, i ahve one sat in my garage you can have a butchers at etc for ideas on work and cost if you haven't done one before.

Will you bet at the WilliamsClio Donnington track day by any chance?

I can prepare an exchange manifold before arrival yes, but even then a bit of work needs to be done to the plenham.

Dont think i'll be at the track day sadly.

The Rsi manifold is iffy, there is a small amount of work that can be done, but gains will be per application.
