best back up software?

  RB 200 Cup!
What would people recommend - its to back up files from several comps onto an external hard drive connected to my computer

Symantec BackupExec on the main PC with remote Windows Agent on each PC is probably the "best".

Looking at £120 per PC and like £300 for BackupExec though ;)

Depends what level you need?

Arcserve isn't that expensive is it?
I use Arcserve quite a bit (I prefer it actually), but I thought of BckupExec as I know it does backup to folder etc really well.

Also, if you get the desktop/laptop option, the remote PCs can login and back themselves up pretty easily.. which is a very cool feature for many.

tbh i cant remember how much my arcserve stuff cost but i was needing open file agents and exchange premium options as well as all the other guff but im sure the base product was 800 ish but i could be wrong

If you want CHEAP as In free then, NTBackup scheduled to run on each computer. Set your External Hard Drive as shared. Map the said Hard drive to each machine and that would do.

Although Ntbackup isnt great buts its free

Base is £250/£300. The options can be anything like £400/£500 each for Exchange, SQL etc.

As rasclart already posted but I was too lazy to read the whole thread:

Use built in NTBACKUP, set a scheduled job on each PC to backup the files requested to a BKF file locally. Then later in the evening schedule a copy batch to pickup the BKF's from each machine and dump them on you external disk. Cost = £0.00

That is assuming you don't have many PC's Also might be worth looking to move the files from PC's. Might be better to chuck them all on a central server and share them.
