Best bang for buck airbox/filter mods?

  Ph2 Clio 172
Hi

Having found hardly any difference from having a Pipercross panel filter in my 172, and realising that a cleaning kit costs twice as much as a stock paper filter, im looking to just stick a stock filter back in when my cars serviced.

Unless there is a good alternative? I'm looking to just have fun in my car so not interested in making it sound better. Is there any airbox or filters that are a cheap way to add some power, or shall I just stick with the paper?

Cheers

Pipercross instead of ITG. Less restrictive.

Fred will be along shortly to tell you that standard is best.

Inlet mods I'd recommend are the matched inlets - Someone's doing a group buy at the moment. Much more poke mid range, better MPGs and a much better freed up rev range from my experience.

V6/Ph1 airboxes are generally suggested as the best (there have been many studies (search ;-) )) but really without other breathing mods (inlets/exhaust/decat) they are next to useless on their own. You may see 0.1hp gain if you're lucky haha.

ITBs are the best non-forced induction mod, but you're talking 4 figures. Matched inlets ~£200, ph1 airbox ~£60 new from Renault. Much better VFM IMO

The JMS Works package (matched inlets, V6 airbox with pipercross filter and remap) is really good, I had a 12bhp gain.

Pointless, basically. Rather than spend money chasing minimal gains, get something like a whiteline ARB. Makes the car more fun to drive, result. No airbox/breathing mods will replicate that improvement.

Ive got a Pipercross atm, noticed no difference from the paper one it replaced.

I was thinking this too. If there isnt a good cheap mod I will spend the money elsewhere on things like springs or and ARB or brakes.

Thing is once you've bought the cleaning kit, the filter will last a very long time? Its a bit of a waste to keep chucking paper filters away too if you went to get all "eco"

Very true. Though something like the JMS Work's package would be worthwhile for the car feeling nicer through the revs with a tad extra poke.
