Best oil for a 1.6?

Cars due a service and im going to do it myself, just wondered which was the best brand oil to get. I understand Elf is recomended and heard that Castrol GTX makes the engine tappy. Any views opinions please.

Never changed the oil on my car yet.

Any 5w40 will be fine, i've used halfords own brand (comma) for ages and it seems fine.
