best Panel filter*

whats the best panel filter to go for? where in the UK can i get a K&N panel filter for clio MKII 172? what price. Also honestly, does it add 2bhp at speed?

any suggestions, i may leave the standard one in. but it doesnt seem to be hard to swap and change on a weekend if i go crusing i could put it in then for a bigger sound and remove for day to day? how does that sound. I can take it out for servicing cos i dont want to lose my waranty.

Hi Phill,

I have an ITG panel filter fitted to my 172 - dont think many peeps have one of these panel filters fitted! I cant really comment as to whether it has made a difference, as I have had it fitted from day 1!. The sound is slightly increased though. I think its all a much of a muchness between the different panels filters, though I found the ITG one was very good quality. 30 min job i would say to swap over filters!

^^^^^ he means he thinks Pipercross make good panel filters. So do I :)
lol, in summary yes. Doing the trick for me.

I hope its dry a week on Sunday. I can feel a 14 coming on. :D

My standard 172 is due for a service shortly & instead of fitting a new oem filter I am thinking of putting in a performance panel filter instead. Is this worth it considering I dont have an uprated exhaust? I wouldnt mind a bit more noise & better throttle response but dont want to mess up the performance.

What do ya reckon?

Hi I have a green filter in my 172 and truthfully there is no difference in performance to the normal paper element..i have researched this with both the paper filter and the performance filter using ron 95, sul and optimax fuel and in my car i am sure the car struggles to go past 130mph with the green element in.

I have read somewhere maybe on here that a car with a performance element actually lost 2bhp over the paper element.

But each to their own, I would prefer the full enclosed induction kit.

Other reason I am taking mine out, the insurance company need to know about this mod and it costs me £60 a year and its nearly renewal time.

My insurance Co said no premium for a replacement panel filter but £45 for induction kit / open Air filter. I fiited the Green filter (replacement panel) and felt a slight improvement in mid / top end revs and a small increase in induction noise. As for drop off of 2 BHP that was for an Open Air filter with no cold air feed / shield.

Whether or not you believe the power gain claims, you can save money by fitting a re-usable panel filter, as you dont have to pay your dealer to fit a paper one each time you have a service.

Judging by the rolling roads Ive been on this year Id say there is a strong chance having the pipercross panel in lost me a couple of BHP, but it also made it pull a little harder, so its swings and round abouts.

Last night on the way home was my first chance to give it some stick with both the filter and the exhaust. Its a hell of a lot more lively, the ESP cutting in on two occasions, thats something which never happens. At mid to high revs there is a very noticable improvement. I hope to confirm this at Santa Pod on the 2nd of November. Weather permitting.

I was wondering about that Mike? So I take it I can just tell them to leave the filter alone and its still classed as a full service?

I did - they wrote it on the jobsheet - no fuss at all.
