Best Replacement Element

  Skoda Fabia vRS

im gonna try goin back to the OE airbox on my RT an see how it feels, and maybe see if it solves that problem ive been having

what do you all think is the best one to go for, cotton or foam

the ITG foam ones are only £20 which is pretty good, but i think cotton might flow better

also, ive just read this online:

"The particles between 10 and 20 microns are most harmful to your engine. Compare this to cotton gauze which cannot filter below 20 microns"

I dont really know mate. They all claim to have the best filtering in one way or the other. I think that foam is claimed to have multiple layers that trap the dirt and are supposedly better off road; whereas cotton are better for road use because they flow more air and as they get dirtier they still work just as well as when clean (you have to wash them eventually, but they are supposed to be just as efficient after a few thousand miles, if not more?)

Thats just the blurb that Ive heard, Ive not seen an independent rundown on it so I couldnt say for sure. Ive got a K&N element myself and it works fine, but all the cotton elements Ive seen always seem a lot more flimsy than the foam ones, and they definitely do melt if they get too hot. I dont know of anyone whos ever broken a foam filter in any way.

Must agree Nick..

I must, yet again, quoteth from the book of Nicole

as in lol, that, the engine is designed to be protected with a fiter partical )pass through) size equivelant to the original filter. Providing this is achieved, then it dont mean diddly.

Before ya say.. "what about performance mode use and its effects on wear ?"....

Its just that particles dont wreck an engine, friction does..

So, bottom line is that ANY claim of better filtration is merely a method of detracting from the fact that they have nothing else to say.. ie, no increase in flow was measured..

Now, if they can quote a flow increase due to filtration restriction, then great.

Joe.

hmmmm, if you were changing yours Joe would you go for foam or cotton

(an your not allowed to say standard element ;))

oh, an ive seen proof first hand of the improved flow rate of a K&N filter, Demon Tweeks have a nice little demo machine hooked up and you can change the filter on it from a standard type to a K&N one, it has some fans and a ping pong ball, and when you use the K&N filter the ping pong ball goes up in a tube, if you switch to the paper one it wont budge off the bottom

Brun, I would go for a filter that fitted in the place I wanted it to go.

that would be the main criteria.

Joe. ;)

otherwise, yes, I would use the standard element.

ya mean the ping pong ball. ???

yep, but good for back fires..

:D

It would be interesting to repeat the ping pong ball trick with an airfow comensurate with engine breathing, and see what difference it makes.. ie

increase the pressure and use a heavier ball... how much change is there then ??.. me would say non at all...

LOL!

i have no idea mate! where di that come from!?

i meant a marbe down a port wouldnt help! HAHA
