What's everyone's view on the best sat nav?

Has to work with the pink windscreen in 172's.

anything with tomtom, ipaq pdas never fail or crash in my experience. I've got one permanently installed in the visor. Hasnt crashed ever.

So you have two aerials on your roof?

I was told the tom tom one gets perfect reception through the pink windscreen?

  R35 GTR
Aerials can be positioned in any of the three rear windows. My road angel one is in drivers side rear and ipaq one is stuck onto boot with its built in magnet.

i have a navman 510i.....
f**king love it......

i got the external aerial for it and put in the passenegr side rear-pannel on the inside..works a treat.:)

Do most of these sat nav's come with an external aerial or do you have to buy this?

Wheres the cheapest place to buy sat navs?

get yourself a garmin i3 chap you can pick em up now for 120 quid and have full postcode recognition 256mb sd memory with uk/eire and major european roads preloaded, also has a custom poi setting along with camera zones/blackspots etc but your most prob need the external antenna which is another 25 quid;)

the aerial is just a little block and not too noticeable on ure roof few wires but can be tucked away

most aerial is seperate clio windscreen is crap for reception

That's impressive. Wouldnt want to drive around all the time with that down though.

I'm sure Jay said the tom tom one works fine through the windscreen????

some units seem to work fine without the extra antenna some heated windscreens are a prob aswell as ones impregnated with iron oxide otherwise known as comfort windscreens

dave that is SLICK!! which one is that u need new sunvisor? dunno maybe tom tom is but reception always better and easier to get with aerial

Probably ebay, not looked at prices much mate, can't be arsed spending £200 when I could spend it getting colour coded etc.

we do Garmins at work and i cant fault any of them

used a c310 and a Nuvi 300 recently and they are both brilliant units

dont get into the thing of spending tons on a sat nav, you dont need to, the more expensive ones usually just have more of europe on them and fancy features you will never use

Can the Tom Tom One be updated to include maps of Europe to as it says its only for the UK?

Yes it can, it means doing a few bits but it is possible. Copy and paste the maps onto the device.

I have a tom tom 700. Its awesome. It has the maps of europe already in the device. It has a 2.5 GB harddrive and you can take calls from it using the bluetooth facility. It has a microphone and a loud speaker so you dont have to wear one of those gay ear pieces.

Takes you outside where you want to go. It has a postcode and house number facilty for really good accuracy.

If you are in the middle of a town/city you have never been to before and you dont know where anything is. Click "places of interest" and you can find petrol stations, fastfood restuarants, hotels. It really is awesome!

It also has a speed camera facilty. It tells you where speed cameras are well in advance and where the police like to hang out to catch you speeding. This is run from a database so you will have to update it to make sure you have them all stored on there.

I work at Currys. We never get Tom Toms back so Id say they were very reliable and they are by far the best system you can buy anyway.

Hope I helped! :boring:

What's the Garmin ones like? They seem cheaper but do the same thing...are they not as reliable or not offer as many features?

Garmin are just as, if not more, reliable than Tom Toms, Tom Tom were on watchdog a few weeks back

they are basically just the hoover of the sat nav market, they got in first with all the advertising etc and now everyone just asks for tom tom

Garmin have been doing GPS systems for years, before tom tom was even thought of, mountain climbers etc dont use a tom tom, they use garmin, big tanker ships dont use tom tom, they use garmin, aeroplanes dont use tom tom, they use garmin, they know the most about the whole system and they are very reliable with excellent customer support

im sure tom toms are perfectly fine and more than likely very good, but dont overlook any of the garmin units as they are excellent sat navs and im sure in a year or 2 will be just as well known as tom tom

Thanks for ur info mate. Just got myself a tom tom one in the end. Liking it. Apart from the stupid woman who gives directions. gonna turn her off or try and get another voice.

Can voices be downloaded for free as of maps or do u have to pay for them as said on the site?

chris... send me your email address and i'll send you a load of voices :)

tomtom make you pay for the voices... and also the map upgrades.....!

working at halfords on ripspeed brings me to kno tomtoms are best. the only problem you ever hsve is it may not turn on once in a while but all u do is shove a pin in the reset button and your away again. people forget they are basically little pc's and think they should never ever crash!

garmins..yeah not too bad. good value of money to say they basically compete with the tomtom rsnge on userability but then again half of the people that come to buy satnavs have never heard of them and usually go for navmans even though navmans are the most unreliable piece of crap in the world!
