Best tyres for the track

  Boxster S
Seeing as I've just picked up my 15's (Cheers again for dropping them off Chris) I'm going to need some new tyres on them...
Seeing that I've brought them to get some cheap tyres for the track, what would people suggest for a set of 195x15's on a 182??

Yeah the £250,000 Merc done the job no problem!! Still can't believe how much it's worth at times.
I'm going to hunt around for prices to see what I can get, don't think I can get anything before Donny next weekend though :(

Big question.
Do they need to be road legal? If so get some Yokohama A048Rs.
If not, and you're convinced it's going to be dry, get some Michelin slicks from Yozza.

Forget road tyres, they're complete rubbish compared to competition rubber.

seriously AVIOD PE2's for the track, we destroyed a NEW pair in 20laps

the shoulders on them just disintergrate (and that was running at 38psi!!)

I would like them to be road legal as I'm not really sure I'll be all that keen to carry the extra set of wheels around and change them at the track.
The car comes as standard on PE2's as I'm sure you know, not sure what I'm going to do at the moment, got the holiday to factor into everything!!

You would destroy pretty much any new road tyre on the track as the tread blocks move around too much.
3/4 worn are the best. Also beware using slicks as it can easily cause oil starvation resulting in engine failure.

Tell me a good all weather road tyre that doesnt do this....Dont include track orientated tyres like R888, A048r etc.

Any all weather road will do the same... the only one i found that dont do this are PS2 (but dont come in 16") i have tried all tyre makes ont he EVO (inc Trackdays) in PS2 were the only ones that the sidwalls survive. New Yoko Parada may be good but i have lots of feedback thay are Yoko Crap in the wet.

I've given A539's death for 70 laps at Castle Combe in a day, on a hot mid-summers day, and not one single treadblock did anything other than wear evenly and quickly.

They may be s**t in the wet, but on a dry track, they're nicely progressive, and can handle huge amounts of abuse and heat without disintegrating.

I remember looking at Lees after a day at Brands, and his PE2's were almost shoulderless!

Plus, compared to the more specialised rubber, the A539's are dirt cheap too.

PS2 Cups are the best all round track tyre. Still OK in the wet compared to all the the other Track bias tyre.

  EK9 + Mfactory gearing..
..are you running parada spec 2 rmccardal? i have a539, feedback is good in the dry as is wear. with new alloys on the way im having a similar dilema...stick with what i know or try some new tyres?

if you've got dedicated track wheels, then run some dedicated track rubber.

Some hard compound semi's or tarmac stage remoulds from colway are brilliants and not alot of money, plus they last ages.

Have you had experience of the Colways Ben?

I've seen them about, and they look very reasonable, but a remould on a trackday? Is that not asking for trouble when braking hard from 100+?

Or do they come warranted?

Nope, no problems.

Majority of clubman rally racers use them......remoulds is misleading, they are approved for competition use.

They last well, grip well and cost next to nothing.

Is it possible to squeeze a 205 tyre on to a wheel which currently has 195's on it? It's the wheel from a Dynamique...

As someone who does rally, i would say Colways are a false economy. 3/4 part worn road tyres will give the same performance.

yep we sometimes run 205/50 15's on dynamique wheels

I have used Max Sport RB5 remoulds on the Coupe, and although they do grip slightly better than road tyres, the difference isn't good enough tbh. I'm running Dunlop Formula R tyres at the moment, and they are awesome, best tyres i've used. They were good enough to be within a second of a VX220T, Westfield, new 911 turbo, many elises, scoobys etc. at yesterday SELOC sprint  .
