best tyres

  172 ph1 ASBO SLAYER

quick question, what are the best tyres for the mk1 172, i need some fairly urgently (runnin slicks again :( )

currently on 195/50/15 pilot sxs

i need a good dry weather tyre, with good cornering ability and stability & can handle thrashing down country lanes (lumps, bumps and dodgy cambers)

any ideas?

The Toyo Proxes T1Ss I was running today were quite nice to drive on, thought theyve been superceded by the T1R. Not sure Im looking forward to when it rains though, from what Ive heard... lol

Will you not have to find a trade-off though? i.e. good cornering would mean a stiff sidewall in my mind (PE2 exaltos from what I hear, and the T1Rs apparently) but good bump absorption would mean a softer sidewall (Goodyear Eagle F1s are quite soft sidewalled I believe).

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD-3s

Used them to the max today, track, roundabouts, fast sweeping roads - very impressed, people that were following me will testify :D

£33 each from mytyres.com

The best tyres I have ever had were Bridgestone S-02s but sadly they are like rocking horse sh!t these days and not available in many sizes.

Got Goodyear Eagle F1s on currently and they are pretty damn good, lasting well too, highly recommended.

Had Toyo Proxes T1-Ss as well, good for the money, deffo worth buying if money is tight, although the new T1-R is a better tyre for similar money.

Uniroyal Rainsport 1s, had these on my Cup, they do not last well at all, and werent anything special either.

i had toyo T1-S on mine and didnt like them

i find the gsd3s are much much better:D

no one like yokohamas A539? they seem to grip quality in mine wet and dry?

I would tend to agree with you but after a while when your near the markers these wheels give up.
I once use to swear by these but lately they,ve really let me down in the wet.

  Lots of Alfas

Im on my second lot of contis sportcontacts, cant fault them and they still grip well even when they are badly worn, a good all rounder.

i had conti sportcontacts on my mr2 turbo, it ripped em to shreds after bout 6k. the n/s/r actually de-laminated when i enthusiastically exited a roundabout! (a chunk of tread about the size of a 50p piece came off, rapidly followed by the rest a mile or so later). was not impressed!

^^^ lmao :D

Think youll like the gsd3s - if theyre even better than the gsd2s that Ive got then I will be in shock and demanding they start producing them in 185/55/15s! lol

It rained yesterday and I had a little play on my now slightly worn toyos ;) and Im pleased to say that, although ultimate grip in the wet is nowhere near as good as the Eagles , they are nice and progressive and quite playful on roundabouts :devilish: hehe

Just dont quote me on that when Ive had a lift-off-oversteer moment of the unintentional variety... LOL

I always looked forward to the rain when I was running the eagles, I have to say - you can literally drive as if it was dry! You can just leave everyone else floundering around! :devilish: :p

The Eagle F1s I had on my old Pug306 were the best tyre Ive ever had on any car. Fantastic grip in the wet and dry.

PE2s rule. Have much more grip than the contis and are almost as good in the wet as they are in the dry.

I would have the GSD3s or PE2s.
